Comparing the Magma Chambers Under the Hunga Volcano Before and After the 2022 Eruption

A collaborative effort comprising geologists, volcanologists, and Earth scientists hailing from institutions such as the Carnegie Institution for Science, Earth and Planets Laboratory in the U.S., GNS Science and Wairakei Research Center in New Zealand, Auckland University of Technology, the University of Auckland (both in New Zealand), and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in Tonga, has made strides in partially charting the magmatic system beneath the Hunga volcano. This comprehensive mapping endeavor encompasses the period preceding and following the volcano's eruption in 2022.

The Socorro Magma Body: A Unique Opportunity to Understand Volcanoes Better

While volcanoes have been extensively examined, delving into the intricacies of underlying magma transport remains a formidable challenge. Grant Block, a graduate student in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at The University of New Mexico, recently conducted a comprehensive investigation of the Socorro Magma Body (SMB) in Socorro, New Mexico. This research provides valuable insights into magmatic processes crucial to volcanic activity, despite the absence of such activity directly above the SMB.
