Who is Tighnari?

Tighnari emerges as a playable Dendro character within the expansive realm of Genshin Impact. Functioning as the resolute Chief Officer of the Forest Rangers, Tighnari assumes the role of mentor to Collei. In spite of his profound intelligence, he opts for a solitary existence nestled within the depths of Avidya Forest, eschewing the conventional environs of the Sumeru Akademiya’s ivory tower.

Tighnari, embodying the role of a Forest Watcher, possesses extensive expertise in the diverse realms of plant and animal species, with a particular emphasis on flowers and mushrooms. His dedicated exploration leads him to spend significant periods immersed in the rainforests of Sumeru, meticulously studying plant species to maintain a harmonious and thriving ecosystem. As the esteemed Chief Officer of the Forest Watchers, he approaches his responsibilities with utmost seriousness, offering earnest advice to the receptive and delivering stern lectures to those who dismiss his counsel.

His loyalty extends deeply to friends, and he nurtures these connections with genuine care. Tighnari’s sensitivity is not limited to the lush greenery around him; his ears, attuned to the delicate nuances of nature, make him particularly vulnerable to the disturbances caused by thunder and wind. The arid embrace of the desert proves equally unwelcome, as his constitution struggles against the heat, making him susceptible to heatstroke.

In the capacity of a mentor, Tighnari guides Collei, who holds him in high esteem as a master figure. His commitment to knowledge manifests in his meticulous oversight of her education, ensuring a thorough understanding of the subjects at hand. While maintaining a friendship with Cyno, Tighnari remains unimpressed by his humor, having weathered countless unfunny jokes that he finds more cringe-worthy than amusing.

Appearance of Tighnari

Tighnari opts for the medium-sized male model, showcasing a complexion that leans towards fairness. His distinctive features include chin-length, dark green hair with roots in stark black, adorned with light green streaks framing the front. His eyes, with pale pupils, seamlessly transition from a deep brown hue to a vibrant green. Notably, he sports sizable, pointed black ears and boasts a fluffy tail characterized by dual shades of dark green.

Character stories of Tighnari

Wandering through the depths of Avidya Forest, occasional encounters with a peculiar Forest Watcher add an unexpected charm to the journey. Sporting large ears, an elongated tail, and a delicately expressive face, he could easily be mistaken for a rare creature indigenous to the wooded expanse. However, those familiar with him recognize the clarity in his words and the assuredness in his demeanor.

“One moment, please. Judging from your equipment, you’re a traveling merchant bound for Sumeru City, aren’t you? Come back, please, you’re going the wrong way.”

“I mean, just look over there. The leaves are dense and the air grows damper. That doesn’t seem like the main road leading to the city, no matter how you slice it.”

“Oh dear, your waterskin is empty, isn’t it?”

“Come, let me share some with you. Being in a rainforest is no reason to skimp on your water supply.”

“If you drink any old water you find out here, you might next find yourself at Bimarstan, you know?”

“Of course, if that is part of your itinerary, then I suppose you have… interesting opinions.”

Amidst this flurry of instructions, the lost traveler finds all arrangements swiftly handled without even realizing it.

“Um… Thank you so much! Still, uh, might I ask who you are…?”

As the other Forest Rangers observe the traveling merchant bowing to the diminutive Forest Watcher, laughter bubbles up involuntarily.

“Pfft-haha! Ahem. This is our G— Well, Forest Watcher Tighnari.”

1st character story

Beyond the rudimentary tasks of forest upkeep, the Forest Rangers frequently confront an array of issues rooted in human activities: encampments appearing arbitrarily, haphazard shacks crafted at the expense of flora, refuse sites burgeoning with domestic waste that threatens pollution, and the lingering embers of bonfires awaiting complete extinguishment.

In grappling with these predicaments, their role extends beyond mere problem-solving; they must also strive to admonish the transgressors. Yet, the efficacy of these reprimands is not always guaranteed until the arrival of Tighnari to the Forest Watchers.

His scholarly precision manifests in his uncompromising “lessons” for those causing trouble. However, more significantly, Tighnari excels in elucidating the correct course of action and the rationale behind it in a manner accessible to his pupils.

In his perspective, the wilderness skills are a form of knowledge, and imparting this wisdom is an art in itself. Rather than dispensing dry advice, he finds it more effective to candidly highlight errors and elucidate the stakes involved.

This philosophy places Tighnari at odds with the Akademiya’s approach to the Akasha Terminal. For him, knowledge is the collective treasure of all living things, a passion to be embraced by those curious, rather than a mere survival tool rationed in limited quantities.

As a young researcher, Tighnari lacked the influence to challenge the Akademiya, and even now, he can only exert limited influence. The dissonance between ideals and reality is an unavoidable aspect of his journey.

Hence, encountering an unfortunate individual receiving a lecture from Tighnari is a familiar sight in the heart of Avidya Forest.

2nd character story

Upon Tighnari’s initial arrival at Gandharva Ville, he assumed the role of an ordinary member within the Forest Rangers, indistinguishable from any other Forest Watcher.

“Rather than taking part in all these babbling debates about all these ‘big ideas,’ I might as well change the forest for the better in a practical manner, using what I’ve [sic] learned.”

This was the sentiment that accompanied Tighnari, a recent graduate from the Amurta school who had distanced himself from the Akademiya. However, the reality he encountered within the Forest Rangers revealed significant organizational issues. While their passion for forest protection was unwavering, the overall structure lacked rationality and scientific rigor.

Unwilling to let things stagnate, Tighnari, ever active and proactive, took charge to bring about change. He introduced a rationalized forest patrol log, assigned tasks based on individual strengths, and conducted regular natural history training for his team members. With the wholehearted collaboration of his fellow rangers, the efficiency of forest patrols in Avidya Forest, particularly around Gandharva Ville, reached exemplary levels.

Naturally, Tighnari’s knowledge and dynamism earned him the admiration of the Forest Rangers, and he soon found himself bestowed with a new title among his colleagues.

“Hey there, General Watchleader! Could you look over the journal entry I wrote for today?”

“General Watchleader! I’ve [sic] found some baggage down in the Chinvat Ravine. I’ve placed it in the lost and found section.”

“Oh no, where has Sag gone… Um, General Watchleader, have you seen it around?”

Initially dismissing these titles as slips of the tongue, Tighnari grew concerned as the moniker persisted.

“Do we actually have that rank? Or are we going for something similar to ‘General Mahamatra’?”

Despite his colleagues’ insistence, Tighnari eventually persuaded them to revert to calling him “Forest Watcher,” “Master,” or “Mr. Tighnari.”

“I’m afraid ‘General Watchleader’ is too great a title for me to bear,” he asserted.

“Heh, that actually reminded me of a joke someone once told about the title of ‘General Mahamatra’…”

He chose not to disclose the other reason behind his refusal of the title.

3rd character story

During a certain period in Sumeru, a brilliantly hued flower captivated the populace, becoming a sought-after embellishment for homes and establishing itself as a prevailing trend. However, this floral beauty, plucked from the rainforest, displayed a fleeting vibrancy, with a lifespan of a mere two days once removed.

Discarded and left to decay, the once-vibrant flowers became an environmental concern for the Forest Rangers. Recognizing the potential harm to the forest ecosystem, Tighnari proposed a collaborative solution with city flower sellers.

The Forest Rangers offered to assist in gathering fresh flowers at no cost. In return, the sellers would inform buyers that returning the flowers by the second day would earn them a receipt, redeemable within the next three days for a meticulously crafted dried flower decoration—provided by Tighnari and the Forest Rangers. The buyers could determine the payment amount akin to a charity bazaar, with a portion allocated as a service charge for the store owner and the rest directed towards funding the Forest Rangers’ rainforest maintenance endeavors.

This cooperative venture proved remarkably successful. Flower shop owners benefitted by avoiding the challenges of deep rainforest excursions and earning additional income. Simultaneously, the Forest Rangers maintained control over the flower-gathering process, ensured sustainable quantities, and secured supplementary funds. Buyers not only received a temporary floral companion but also a lasting keepsake.

Yet, some Rangers questioned the approach, suggesting a straightforward ban on flower gathering. Tighnari, shaking his head, responded, causing his ears to quiver.

“We shouldn’t make such simple calculations. If we were to force our requests through, we would be just like a stolid lecturer who fails to have others understand, but who stirs up feelings of rebellion instead.”

“If that were to happen, our reputation would be the least of our woes — we would have our hands full trying to deal with those who were coming to pick flowers illegally!”

“In any case, trends will change. Don’t worry. I’m sure the people’s attention will shift to something else soon.”

Pragmatic as these words were, they resonated with the Forest Rangers, with Collei expressing rapid agreement.

“The dried flower decorations that Master taught us to make have been pretty popular with the children, too!”

4th character story

Members of Tighnari’s enigmatic race are typically perceived as rare and solitary individuals. However, Tighnari’s circumstances deviated from this stereotype.

Despite dedicating considerable time to research and prioritizing scholarly pursuits over social connections, Tighnari found himself unintentionally surrounded by a cadre of comrades. Excelling in his early Akademiya studies, he became a sought-after source for academic assistance, often joining group photos after seminar courses, even though he didn’t fully grasp their significance.

“Tighnari knows everything, and he’s so nice to talk to!” became a popular refrain, with students from various Darshans vying for his attention and collaboration.

This popularity eventually caught the eye of General Mahamatra Cyno, who initially suspected academic corruption and ulterior motives. However, upon closer observation, Cyno realized that Tighnari’s interactions were driven purely by goodwill. Tighnari’s singular focus on his work and dispassionate response to collaboration offers left no room for questionable dealings.

Concluding that Tighnari was an upright and reliable talent with no hidden agendas, Cyno’s guarded stance softened. This pure impression eventually led the General Mahamatra, known for maintaining distance from scholars, to become friends with Tighnari.

These interconnected factors set the stage for yet another meaningful encounter with a new comrade.

“This young lady’s name is Collei?”

“It’s okay if you can’t read or write. We all start having no knowledge — in this, you are no different from anyone else.”

“Shall we start with writing your name, then?”

5th character story

All enthusiasts of research share a passion for the pursuit and an innate curiosity about the unknown, and Tighnari was no exception. His inquisitive nature seemed to have been ingrained in him from early childhood.

While his peers were engrossed in fairy tales, young Tighnari delved into the crates and shelves of his parents’ study. From his father, an insect researcher, he borrowed general textbooks, and from his paleontologist mother, he acquired images of fossils. With his tail hugging him, Tighnari absorbed this wealth of knowledge, whether he comprehended it or not.

As his knowledge expanded, so did the scope of his inquiries. For instance, he pondered why others were born without ears and tails like those in his family. In the ancient tomes of his home, Tighnari stumbled upon a manuscript left by an ancestor concerning the “Valuka Shuna.”

According to the records, the Valuka Shuna were a race subjected to the Scarlet King, dwelling in the vast desert with light-colored fur and excellent heat-dissipating large ears. Catastrophe struck, and only through the grace of the Dendro Archon, their fur turned green, allowing them to survive.

“It is worth noting that while Valuka Shuna were noted to have been more like foxes, the meaning of their name was ‘large desert dog.'”

“Oh my,” thought young Tighnari in astonishment, “so I’m a ‘large desert dog!'”

The technicalities of inheriting traits from the Valuka Shuna were of no consequence to an excited child. Immediately, Tighnari implored his father to take the ‘large desert dog’ back to the desert on his next surveying trip.

Unfortunately, their venture met an accident. A few meters into the desert, Tighnari succumbed to the heat, prompting a swift return to the rainforest.

“Oh no,” mused Tighnari as he recovered in his treehouse, “the ‘large desert dogs’ have devolved in my generation.”

Years later, the once-ignorant child transformed into a dependable researcher, and the past event became a humorous anecdote. Presently, Tighnari not only understands why the Aranara bestowed that name but also comprehends the reason behind his susceptibility to desert heat.

The former is simple. Biologically speaking, foxes and dogs are both canines, and the Aranara likely considered them interchangeable.

Regarding the latter, although Tighnari hesitates to admit it, it likely stems from his father’s words as he tousled his hair.

“This lad’s fur is an intensely dark shade of green. He’s going to have trouble in the desert heat for sure!”

Vision

Academic conferences were an inescapable aspect of life at the Akademiya, whether one was there to learn or work. The podium hosted eloquent speakers, while the audience offered their support—a routine spectacle at such gatherings.

Yet, within the vast sea of information, even the most dedicated researchers were not immune to making mistakes. Tighnari found himself in the midst of one such conference where a speaker expounded on matters he knew to be untrue. As a bystander and listener, he observed his classmates and teachers maintaining an uneasy silence.

The dilemma weighed on him. Was he the sole observer of the problem, or did everyone recognize the issue but refrain from causing the speaker embarrassment? Tighnari hesitated briefly before summoning his resolve. The pursuit of knowledge, a steadfast guide, propelled him forward.

Despite the challenges posed by his status and the setting, Tighnari raised his hand and spoke, “My apologies. If I may interject—”

The speaker, initially taken aback, swiftly acknowledged him and welcomed his elaboration. Tighnari’s corrections were indeed valid, leading to the speaker earnestly accepting the necessary adjustments.

Following their exchange, other attendees, both students and teachers, chimed in, offering additional perspectives and unveiling new research angles. Notably, Tighnari received namecards from well-known researchers.

As the incident concluded, Tighnari sighed with relief. It was heartening to witness his peers acknowledging the gravity of knowledge.

However, the true stroke of fortune occurred when the meeting concluded. Standing to leave, Tighnari heard a distinctive “clink!”

Lo and behold, a Vision had slipped from his garments, finding a resting place on the chair below.
