Marvel’s Wolverine Leads September US Game Sales Despite Backlash

Marvel’s Wolverine became the top-selling video game in the United States for September 2026, giving Sony its largest launch revenue month since Helldivers 2 despite early player backlash.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Insomniac Games led the United States video game market in September [1]. Market research firm Circana tracked purchases during the monthly tracking period, finding that Marvel’s Wolverine finished as the number one best-selling game in both digital downloads and retail disc sales [3]. Insomniac developed the game as an exclusive for PlayStation 5 [1]. The action adventure generated Sony’s highest launch month dollar sales since Helldivers 2 arrived in February 2024, despite loud pre-launch player complaints before its September 15 debut [2], [3]. Marvel’s Wolverine sales showed that customer demand remained strong when the game reached store shelves [1].

Circana Ranks Marvel’s Wolverine Sales First in September

Circana senior director and analyst Mat Piscatella shared the firm’s projected sales data for September, placing Insomniac’s comic adaptation at the top of the US market [1]. The game launched on September 15, giving it only two weeks of sales data to compete against rival games available all month [3]. Despite that shorter window, it generated enough revenue to become the 11th best-selling game of 2026 to date in the United States [1]. Piscatella said that the firm counted both digital downloads and boxed discs bought at retail [3].

Circana counted eight new releases in the monthly top ten, with EA Sports FC 27 landing in second place right behind Wolverine [1], [3]. Fantasy adventure The Blood of Dawnwalker finished in fifth place, PC title WARDOGS took sixth, Onimusha: Way of the Sword claimed seventh, Halloween: The Game took eighth, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve reached ninth. EA Sports FC 27 finished second [1]. Switch 2 exclusive Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave also debuted in the monthly top ten during the crowded September window [3].

Basketball hit NBA 2K27 claimed third place in September. It had previously arrived in third place during August on early access purchases alone, building sustained commercial interest that ultimately carried it past Resident Evil Requiem to become the top-selling game of 2026 so far in the United States. Wolverine still beat it. Even with that heavy sports competition, Marvel’s Wolverine sales topped the monthly sales rankings [1].

Comparing Launch Revenue to Helldivers 2

Mat Piscatella wrote that Marvel’s Wolverine delivered “the highest launch month dollar sales” of any Sony-published game since Helldivers 2 launched in February 2024, setting a two-year revenue high for PlayStation software. But the two games achieved their financial success under sharply different release conditions. Sony launched Helldivers 2 on both PS5 and PC on day one. This gave the multiplayer shooter two wide storefronts from the start [3].

Price points played a central role in how each game generated its revenue totals. Sony released Helldivers 2 at a budget-friendly price of $40, which meant it needed to move far more copies to climb dollar charts. Wolverine cost $70. Because each copy retailed for nearly double the price of the cooperative shooter, Wolverine matched those launch dollars while selling fewer total units [3].

Keeping Logan exclusive to PlayStation 5 hardware allowed Sony to retain full platform fees without sharing cuts with PC digital storefronts. That exclusivity strategy turned Wolverine into a primary console seller for the autumn season. The game did not need PC storefronts to find a massive paying audience [3].

Hardware Impact on PlayStation 5 Revenue

Circana data revealed that PlayStation 5 dollar sales rose by 43 percent in September compared to the same period in 2025. Higher console retail prices contributed to that dollar jump, but customer demand for hardware increased as well. Piscatella said that Wolverine helped drive fresh hardware interest as the autumn shopping season got underway [3].

PlayStation 5 console unit volume increased by 22 percent over September 2025, allowing Sony to lead all hardware platforms in total units moved and overall dollar revenue. PS5 unit sales rose 22 percent. Competing hardware platforms suffered notable declines during the same period. Nintendo’s Switch 2 saw hardware unit sales drop by 14 percent compared to the previous September [3].

Xbox hardware unit sales fell 27 percent year-over-year, setting a new record low for the brand in a September tracking period. Xbox unit sales fell 27 percent. That decline broke the previous record low that Xbox had set in September 2025. The drop occurred amid market shifts where Xbox and PlayStation sales crashed to decades-old lows in prior cycles. But Sony used Wolverine to reverse its course and dominate the September hardware charts [3].

Digital Marvel’s Wolverine Sales on PlayStation Store

Though earlier today Mat Piscatella shared Circana projections, PlayStation also revealed September’s official best-selling games on the digital PlayStation Store. In the United States, Marvel’s Wolverine finished in first place, outpacing EA Sports FC 27, NBA 2K27, Halloween: The Game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Madden NFL 27. American console owners bought the game digitally in large quantities despite its mid-month arrival [2].

On Europe’s PlayStation Store, EA Sports FC 27 claimed the top spot and pushed Marvel’s Wolverine into second place. Soccer kept its lead across Europe. Taking second place behind EA’s soccer giant confirmed broad overseas appeal for Logan. The game found an eager audience across European territories [2].

Digital downloads represented a key factor in Wolverine’s chart dominance. Leading digital downloads in the US and finishing second in Europe showed that Wolverine resonated with mainstream digital buyers who bypassed boxed discs [2].

Review Scores and Summer Controversy

On OpenCritic Reviews, Marvel’s Wolverine holds a Top Critic Avg of 77 out of 100, with a Critics Rec of 64% from approved reviewers. Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Insomniac Games released the action adventure with an ESRB rating of Mature 17+. The rating advisory cited Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, and In-Game Purchases [2]. Logan’s claws received an adaptation matching his comic background [3].

Players criticized combat pacing, dialogue, character facial models, and scent mechanics ridiculed as a “fart trail” gas feature before release [1], [2]. Pre-launch debates also focused on player outcry over Marvel’s Wolverine censorship in international releases. Insomniac patched the tracking trails after release, but Twitter chatter remained critical through September 15 [1].

When everyday gamers got their hands on the controller on September 15, positive word of mouth carried the game past online controversy, as fans wanting a superhero adventure bought copies without caring about altered face models [2]. Insomniac had already earned strong trust through Marvel’s Spider-Man, and that solid reputation reassured players eager to slice through enemies with Logan’s adamantium claws on PS5 hardware [3]. The commercial result showed that vocal social media boycotts rarely stop a major superhero release from topping the sales charts [2]. Casual buyers focused on gameplay rather than online complaints, helping Logan establish immediate dominance in both retail stores and digital downloads [1],. Now the big question is whether Marvel’s Wolverine sales can hold their fast pace into the late autumn shopping season [2].

October brings Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and November introduces Rockstar Games’ GTA 6. Those two releases will compete for player spending during the winter holidays [3]. Even if Wolverine experiences a shorter shelf life, its September triumph gave Sony a lucrative start that surpassed pre-release expectations [2].
