The TV anime adaptation of Destiny Unchain Online will premiere in 2027, starring Ikumi Hasegawa as the protagonist Crim.

Kodansha and the series production committee announced that Destiny Unchain Online will receive a television anime adaptation scheduled to premiere in 2027 [1]. Voice actress Ikumi Hasegawa will star as the lead protagonist Crim, an elite gamer trapped inside a female vampire avatar [3]. Director Koichi Hatsumi leads the project at Studio Voil, while avex pictures shared the first promotional teaser trailer and visual to mark the announcement [4].

Destiny Unchain Online Staff and Cast

Voice actress Ikumi Hasegawa takes on the lead role of Crim, who is known in the real world as middle school gamer Kou Mitsuki [1]. Hasegawa previously played Vladilena Milize in the science fiction anime 86 and portrayed Minami Nanami in Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki, with additional voice credits in Bocchi the Rock! and Uma Musume Pretty Derby [7]. In official comments released with the announcement, Hasegawa said playing a skilled gamer running through the virtual world was very fun, adding: “Just like Crim, who enjoys games to the fullest, I was excited to record each episode!” [4]

Director Koichi Hatsumi leads the television anime at animation studio Voil, bringing leadership from action adaptations such as Tokyo Revengers, Record of Ragnarok III, and Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga [1]. Hatsumi said the entire team is working with all their power on the project, asking fans to watch the finished series with an open mind [3]. The team under Hatsumi focuses on staging fast-paced player combat and team battles inside the virtual fantasy environment [5].

Scriptwriter Seiko Takagi oversees series composition, marking her first time running the full script department for a television anime [3]. Takagi said she was a huge fan of the original books, comparing her initial experience to stepping into the game with only starting equipment and respawning again and again. “It was the protagonist, Crim, who kept pushing me forward,” Takagi said, explaining that she wanted to share that same thrill with as many viewers as possible [4].

The Vampire Girl Premise

The story follows Kou Mitsuki, a middle school student whose high-level gaming reflexes earned him the online title Crim the Headhunter [5]. Kou agrees to test a new virtual reality game called Destiny Unchain Online, which was built by his father paired with a new hardware device developed specifically for the game [1]. What should have been a standard test session goes wrong the moment Kou logs into the virtual world [6].

Instead of logging in at the common starting town, Kou drops into an unfamiliar border region far away, trapped inside the body of a silver-haired, red-eyed vampire girl [3]. The game system normally prohibits gender changes during character setup, but a strange glitch locks the female avatar into place without warning [5]. Worse still, Kou discovers that his father purposely disabled the logout function, leaving the young gamer stranded in the virtual world with no clear path back home [3]. Kou doesn’t panic, but draws on sharp competitive instincts, choosing to survive as Crim while learning how to navigate the untamed wilderness with new allies [6].

Crim deals with an unusual dilemma because the vampire body belongs to a vegetarian who can’t stand the smell of blood [5]. In battle, Crim wields a glowing magical weapon called the Shadow Light Weapon, using high mobility to defeat dangerous monsters and hostile player groups [3]. Those victories in large team clashes eventually earn the protagonist a feared title among top players: the Red Demon Lord [7].

Destiny Unchain Online Publishing Roots

Author resn first introduced the story as a web novel on the Japanese self-publishing platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May 2020 [2]. Author resn later removed the original chapters and deleted the user account, but resumed serializing the adventure on Kadokawa’s Kakuyomu platform in June 2021 [1]. The serial built a loyal online readership, which soon caught the attention of commercial book editors looking for virtual reality fantasy stories [7].

Kodansha picked up the series for print publication under its K Ranove Books imprint, releasing the first light novel volume on November 2, 2022 [1]. Manga creator and illustrator Yachimoto handled the book artwork, designing the characters and monster encounters. Kodansha published the third light novel volume on May 29, 2026, continuing to expand the lore of the virtual MMO [2].

Yachimoto also launched a manga adaptation on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app in July 2022, while running parallel serialization in Shōnen Magazine R starting in August 2022. After Shōnen Magazine R ceased publication, the manga continued exclusively as a digital feature on Magazine Pocket [2]. Kodansha shipped the 13th collected manga volume on August 7, 2026, while K Manga provides official English chapters digitally [1].

Teaser Trailer and Soundtrack

Distributor Avex Pictures and the anime committee released the first promotional teaser video on October 30, 2026, showcasing animated game sequences from the upcoming television series [1]. The teaser visual depicts Crim standing among vine-covered ruins holding the magical Shadow Light Weapon, ready for adventure [3]. In the video teaser, fans get a close look at Crim waking up in the forest and flashing her vampire fangs [6].

Character designer Masashi Kudo adapts Yachimoto’s character designs for the anime screen [3]. Kudo brings an impressive resume from the Bleach franchise, including Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and also worked on Battle Spirits [Re] Zekkai no Sora. “It was a challenging but enjoyable process of trial and error in figuring out how to translate these charming characters into anime form,” Kudo said in his production comments [4].

The musical score unites composers Yuki Hayashi, Yuki Furuhashi, and Hayato to build the soundtrack [1]. Hayashi, known for scoring My Hero Academia and Haikyu!!, created the main theme for the series [7]. “I wanted to capture the exhilaration of venturing into an unknown world and the thrill of conquering challenges together with friends, all within a single song,” Hayashi said [4]. Furuhashi previously co-composed music for My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, rounding out a skilled soundtrack team [1].

Broadcast Plans for 2027

Although an early anime announcement was shared in August 2026, the committee confirmed the 2027 premiere window with the October update [6]. The announcement coincided with the launch of an official Japanese website and a dedicated X account under the handle @DUO_animePR. Those channels will share regular production updates and cast additions leading up to the television premiere [3].

Animation studio Voil continues work on the production, with voice recording sessions already moving forward [1]. Hasegawa stated that she felt excited during each recording session, indicating that dialogue production is making steady progress ahead of the scheduled television debut [3]. Fans can expect further announcements regarding supporting party members as voice sessions continue [4].

Broadcast networks, specific air dates, and international streaming partners have not been announced yet, leaving overseas distribution details to be clarified in future promotional announcements [7]. Kodansha and the production committee plan to reveal supporting cast members, opening theme details, and global streaming platforms as the 2027 debut approaches [1]. Until then, readers can follow the light novel volumes and ongoing manga chapters to experience Crim’s virtual battles [2].
