Published in the peer-reviewed journal Trends in Cognitive Science, the study’s results hold significant implications, spanning clinical, ethical, and even potential legal considerations, as outlined by the authors.
In their research titled ‘Consciousness in the Cradle: On the Emergence of Infant Experience,’ the scientists contend that an infant’s developing brain is sufficiently equipped, by the time of birth, to engage in conscious experiences that may significantly shape their evolving self-awareness and comprehension of their surroundings.
This collaborative effort brought together experts in the fields of neuroscience and philosophy from Monash University (Australia), University of Tübingen (Germany), University of Minnesota (USA), and Trinity College Dublin.
Infant consciousness, despite being a realm each of us has passed through, remains enigmatic. Dr. Tim Bayne, one of the two lead authors of the paper and Professor of Philosophy at Monash University, Melbourne, highlights the challenge: Infants can’t articulate their thoughts or emotions.
Although each of us was once a baby, infant consciousness remains mysterious, because infants cannot tell us what they think or feel, explains one of the two lead authors of the paper Dr Tim Bayne, Professor of Philosophy at Monash University (Melbourne).

Revisiting the inception of consciousness, the team leveraged contemporary breakthroughs in the science of consciousness. While these markers are now commonly employed to discern consciousness in adults through brain imaging, the team applied them to assess infant consciousness for the first time, offering a fresh vantage point.
Lorina Naci, an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology and leader of Trinity’s ‘Consciousness and Cognition Group,’ and a co-author of the study, elaborated:
Our findings suggest that newborns can integrate sensory and developing cognitive responses into coherent conscious experiences to understand the actions of others and plan their own responses.

The study also offers insights into the infant experience. It indicates that infants have a different perception than adults. For instance, their vision is less mature than their hearing. Additionally, infants seem to be aware of fewer things at once compared to adults, and they might take more time to understand their surroundings. Yet, they exhibit a remarkable ability to process a wide range of information, including sounds from different languages, which may surpass that of their older selves.
