The official website for the television adaptation of Satsuki Nakamura’s light novel series revealed a teaser video on Friday for the show’s second cour. Officially titled the “First Royal Outing” arc, the upcoming broadcast run will debut in January 2027 [1]. Fans tracking inept villainess season 2 now have an official window for the series’ return after the opening twelve episodes wrapped up this past autumn [2]. The broadcast begins in January [1].

Inept Villainess Season 2 Teaser Details

The promotional clip dropped through TOHO animation‘s official YouTube channel and the anime’s web portal on Friday morning. Known in Japan as Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga – Sūgū Chōso Torikae Den, the series adapts Nakamura’s palace fantasy novels. Studio Dōga Kōbō leads the animation. The production committee framed the upcoming winter broadcast as the show’s second cours, picking up right after the summer storyline. The clip offers the first official preview for inept villainess season 2 ahead of its winter broadcast, giving viewers a clear look at the animated footage prepared by the studio. It confirms that the upcoming television run will directly adapt the novel series’ second major story arc [1].

The teaser clip introduces the early autumn setting in the fictional, China-like Kingdom of Ei. While the first arc focused on palace rivalries among five imperial consorts, this new storyline follows the court into the outer provinces. Director Mitsue Yamazaki previously directed Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun and Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle [2].

Sumie Noro serves as assistant director alongside script supervisor Yoshiko Nakamura, while Ai Kikuchi returns to handle character design duties [2]. Studio Pablo art director Seina Yaguchi leads the background art team, with Kei Ishiguro managing color design and Yui Fukuoka overseeing compositing photography [1]. The core creative lineup remains intact from the summer run, giving viewers a consistent visual presentation as the narrative moves into unfamiliar provincial territory [2]. Mutsumi Takemiya handles editing, while Yukari Hashimoto composes the musical score to accompany the imperial delegation’s autumn journey [1].

New Cast Members for the Royal Outing Arc

Friday’s promotional announcement revealed three additional voice actors joining the television project ahead of the winter broadcast. Yūichi Nakamura joins the cast as Kou Keikou, Reirin’s eldest brother, while Shunichi Toki plays her second-eldest brother, Kou Keishou. Chiaki Kobayashi portrays Unran, the young leader of a provincial village who encounters the traveling imperial delegation during their journey south, while Reirin’s overprotective brothers arrive to intervene as court rivalries threaten to derail the province’s sacred harvest ceremony. Both brothers step into active roles once family affairs spill into the open court [1].

The main voice cast reprises their roles from the summer broadcast. Manaka Iwami stars as the fragile imperial consort candidate Kou Reirin, while Natsumi Kawaida voices her rival Shu Keigetsu. Makoto Furukawa plays Crown Prince Ei Gyomei, and Yuichiro Umehara voices court advisor Shin-u [2].

Hana Hishikawa and Nikray Farahnaz round out the returning cast as Leelee and Ko Tosetsu, keeping the court hierarchy familiar to returning viewers. Reirin’s brothers arrive to protect her after imperial politics disrupt the provincial festival, introducing sharp family tension into an already fragile court balance. Keikou and Keishou don’t trust the rival clans, and their arrival forces Keigetsu to defend her standing under intense domestic scrutiny as rumors spread through the provincial court. Their summer run covered twelve episodes [2].

Production Timeline and Global Streaming

The anime’s first cour premiered on TV Tokyo and its affiliates on July 12 after facing earlier scheduling setbacks. The production committee initially planned to air the television series during the spring anime season in April, but unexpected scheduling setbacks across the production pipeline forced the studio to delay the debut broadcast until the middle of July. The delay helped the staff [1].

Crunchyroll streamed the weekly episodes as they aired across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent. Netflix handled streaming rights across Asian markets starting on July 12, giving the adaptation broad reach throughout the region. TOHO later released an English dub on July 25 through Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Disney+, expanding access for international audiences who prefer localized voice acting. Singer-songwriter milet performed the opening theme song “Sunny,” while music duo Rokudenashi provided the ending theme song “Shooting Star,” known as “Hōkiboshi” in Japan [1].

The release window aligns with earlier production updates after Toho confirmed the Inept Villainess anime return for next January following the completion of its summer broadcast. That schedule provides the animation staff at Dōga Kōbō with a three-month broadcast break to prepare the upcoming cour, helping the studio maintain consistent quality.

Light Novel and Manga Publication Status

Satsuki Nakamura launched the original novel series with illustrations by YukiKana under the Ichijinsha Novels imprint in December 2020. The manga began simultaneously in 2020. The books reached their 13th volume on September 30, entering the story’s final arc titled “Wish Upon a Star”. Ei Ohitsuji launched a parallel manga adaptation in Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Zero-Sum magazine that continues alongside the print novels [1].

Seven Seas Entertainment publishes both the light novels and manga in English under the title Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court. Seven Seas handles the English translations. The company released the ninth manga volume on August 4, followed by the eleventh light novel volume in English on September 22. Seven Seas describes the overarching premise as an imperial contest among five rival clans within a fantasy realm inspired by historical China, where noble consort Kou Reirin gets body-swapped into the sturdy frame of her attacker right before an impending execution. Instead of despairing over her harsh imprisonment, Reirin uses her robust new body to overcome palace intrigue and political sabotage while navigating her complex relationship with the court [1].

Tohokushinsha Film Corporation oversaw sound production throughout the project, with Yuika Shiraishi managing sound effects and Toshihiro Hayano serving as audio-recording engineer. Casting director Makoto Tanimura coordinated voice talent alongside recording assistant Ryō Kaneko to complete the audio team [1].

Fresh Story Turns in Inept Villainess Season 2

The second cour picks up the narrative during early autumn following the resolution of the inner palace curse. Reirin and Keigetsu have developed a mutual understanding after experiencing life in each other’s shoes, building an unexpected bond between former enemies. The court travels south to the lands governed by the Shu clan to conduct the annual Harvest Festival, where the Crown Prince and maidens pray for a bountiful agricultural season. Keigetsu oversees the preparations under heavy pressure, lacking a royal consort guardian to support her efforts during the ceremony, but Reirin assists her enthusiastically [2].

An unexpected mishap disrupts the opening harvest ritual right as the royal retinue arrives in the southern province, causing Keigetsu’s agitated magic spell to slip out of control and trigger another chaotic body swap between the two women. Before either woman can adjust to the switch, an unknown assailant kidnaps the swapped Reirin from the ceremonial grounds. Keigetsu finds herself blamed for the disappearance as a hidden enemy works to frame her for treason, leaving her with few allies in the provincial court [2].

Reirin’s overprotective brothers join the search as the crisis threatens relations between the royal court and provincial leaders. Unran gets pulled into the investigation while Keigetsu attempts to locate her missing partner. Viewers following inept villainess season 2 will see how the two women resolve this second crisis when the series resumes in January [2]. Winter brings three new cast members [1].
