Idea Factory International announced that Compile Heart’s school RPG Villion Code will launch in the West on January 26, 2027. The game arrives on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC through Steam with physical and digital options [2]. While console editions first debuted in Japan on June 25, 2026, the upcoming Western rollout gives PC owners their first opportunity to purchase the game [1].

Villion Code Western Release Schedule

Western players learned in September that an overseas rollout was planned, but publisher Idea Factory International had kept the specific day unannounced until this week [5]. The confirmed date of January 26, 2027 places the Western release seven months behind the original Japanese console launch [1]. In Japan, the game arrived on June 25, 2026, across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Switch 2, but the Japanese PlayStation 4 version was released exclusively as a digital download. Western territories will instead receive physical copies for multiple console platforms, offering North American and European collectors distinct boxed options that were absent during the original Japanese debut [3].

Digital storefronts have already started getting ready for the launch. PC users can wishlist Villion Code on Steam today, but digital store pages for consoles will go live at a later date [2]. Steam wishlist tracking gives Western audiences a direct way to follow official launch updates before downloadable pre-orders open across digital storefronts [3].

Compile Heart designed Villion Code to run on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam [1]. Consoles display English text with Japanese voices. On personal computers, Steam users gain expanded subtitle localization with English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese text options, making the RPG accessible across multiple international territories right at launch [2].

Adhvan City Under the Bubble

The story takes place in the near future, when humanity faces an approaching calamity that threatens global extinction [2]. To find a way out of this doom, leaders establish an institution named the Advan Resilience Research Academy City, known informally as the Adhvan Resilience School. Daily life inside the complex breaks down when an anomaly strikes the perimeter, generating strange, monstrous creatures known as GEMs that attack civilians. At the exact same time, a mysterious bubble seals the entire academy city off from the outside world, cutting off all communication and stopping anyone from entering or leaving the campus. Trapped residents must face their past actions as they seek the truth behind the disaster [1].

Trapped students can’t rely on outside rescue [1]. They must defend themselves against roaming GEM beasts as they search for the cause of the disaster [2]. Every corner of Adhvan City turns into a contested combat zone [4].

Investigation scenes challenge characters with high-pressure conversation choices under strict timers that immediately alter narrative branches, steer interpersonal alliances, and determine how individual survivors respond to the ongoing crisis [2]. Character designer Ilya Kuvshinov drew full-screen portraits for these encounters [3]. His expressive art captures the emotional weight of each student’s moral burden as the investigation deepens [1].

Sankhara Dungeons and Genome Arms Combat

Party members venture into the Sankhara Space-Time, an abnormal dimensional realm formed from algorithmic 360-degree cylindrical pathways inspired by Buddhist teachings on the Ten Evils [4]. These looping corridors force fighters to navigate twisting geometry, dodge environmental traps, and battle hostile GEM monsters lurking around blind turns [2].

Combat relies on mutating gear known as Genome Arms, which offer distinct fighting traits for each party member [4]. Characters switch back and forth between close-range melee attacks and ranged projectile strikes right in the middle of active fights [2]. By changing stances during combat, fighters chain together long attack combos to break enemy defenses, eliminate hostile GEM creatures, and balance rapid melee strikes with ranged weapons as encounters become more difficult [4].

Upgrading characters requires items collected during dungeon runs [4]. Fighters gather Ampules from fallen GEM enemies to craft items called Genome Cubes, which alter base stats and unlock passive skills [2]. They can boost these cubes further with EX Factors bought in shops or discovered in chests, securing vital combat advantages during difficult dungeon encounters [4].

Creative Staff Behind Villion Code

The development team brings together several well-known industry veterans who helped build classic Japanese role-playing franchises. Creative producer Kouji “Cozy” Okada leads development, recognized throughout the industry as the co-creator of the Megami Tensei and Persona series. Promotional materials from Idea Factory describe Villion Code as “Kouji Okada’s final message to the next generation,” framing this school RPG as a personal statement from a designer who guided the genre for decades. The phrase marks a personal capstone for his decades of creative leadership in Japanese role-playing games [3]. In an interview with Noisy Pixel, Okada spoke about how his past development experience shaped this new game and shared advice for younger creators entering the industry [2].

Writing duties belong to scenario writer Tadashi Satomi, who previously wrote Revelations: Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment [3]. Satomi brings his experience with teenage psychology to the cast, examining how guilt and duty shape the trapped students [4]. Character designer Ilya Kuvshinov provides modern styling for the main cast [3].

The musical score is composed by Tsukasa Masuko, who worked on early entries in the Megami Tensei series and on Dark Auction. Singer FRAM performs the theme song, titled “Rebirth Code”. The Japanese voice cast features notable talent, including Kengo Kawanishi, Aimi, Shunsuke Takeuchi, Atsushi Tamaru, Aoi Nagatsuki, and Asami Shimoda, who voice the students trapped inside Adhvan City [3]. Their vocal work accompanies all story scenes across every platform, maintaining audio consistency between console and PC releases [2].

Physical Editions and Deluxe Bonuses

Retail availability depends on geography [1]. North American buyers can order physical boxed editions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch through traditional retail chains and online distributors [2]. In Europe and the United Kingdom, Idea Factory limits boxed manufacturing strictly to a single PlayStation 5 standard edition sold through its European web store, leaving Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 owners in those regions to buy digital downloads instead [3]. European players on other systems get digital access only [1]. Idea Factory confirmed the European PS5 exclusive physical run [5].

All physical standard editions feature a reversible cover sleeve displaying alternative artwork drawn by Ilya Kuvshinov [2]. Early pre-orders placed through the official Idea Factory International Online Store will also include an exclusive IFI Trading Card while supplies last [3]. Boxed game collectors gain an extra collectible card with their shipment [2].

For digital customers, publisher Idea Factory International will offer a Digital Deluxe Edition of Villion Code with the standard download [1]. This digital package includes a 124-page digital art book featuring illustrations by Kuvshinov, a short story collection written by scenario writer Tadashi Satomi, and a 27-track digital soundtrack composed by Tsukasa Masuko. Console wishlist pages will launch later, but PC users already have access to the Steam store page today, where digital editions will go live on January 26, 2027 [2].
