Japanese television network TV Asahi confirmed on Sunday that Akane-banashi Season 2 will officially premiere in January 2027, releasing a teaser trailer and key visual for the upcoming sequel [3]. Animation studio ZEXCS returns to produce the new season [1]. Two additional voice actors joined the cast to portray new rakugo performers in the story, and core creative leads reprised their production roles to adapt the next arc of the serialized manga [2].

Returning Leads Guide Akane-banashi Season 2 Production

Director Ayumu Watanabe returns to direct Akane-banashi Season 2 at Studio ZEXCS after helming the first television run [3]. Watanabe earlier directed major anime projects including Summer Time Rendering, Children of the Sea, and Witch Hat Atelier [2]. Yu Harima returns as assistant director to support Watanabe on the sequel. Harima previously directed episodes 7 and 20 of Summer Time Rendering and contributed to Tokyo Revengers [3]. Bringing the same directing team back keeps the visual tone steady as the narrative moves into more complex theater halls. The production doesn’t alter its visual foundation, ensuring that the distinctive rhythm of live rakugo monologues translates directly into animated scenes [1].

Character designer and chief animation director Kii Tanaka returns to lead the animation unit for the upcoming season [1]. Tanaka designed Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead [2]. Yasunari Nitta serves as sub-character designer, Noriko Shimazawa manages costume design, and Michihiro Tsuchiya returns to supervise series composition and write scripts, drawing from his past work on Cross Game and Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Urdr-Hunt [3].

Akio Izutsu composes the background music once again. Izutsu previously scored series such as Akuma Kun and Phi-Brain – Puzzle of God [3]. The musical arrangements in the first run leaned heavily on traditional acoustic instruments to match the atmosphere of Tokyo comedy venues, and Izutsu plans to expand that instrumental range for the sequel. Professional performer Kikuhiko Hayashiya continues serving as the official rakugo supervisor for the adaptation. Hayashiya oversees hand gestures, stage posture, fan manipulation, and vocal cadence shown on screen so that every performance accurately reflects historical theater conventions. That supervision prevents animation shortcuts during extended spoken scenes [1].

New Cast Members and Returning Roles

Two new voice actors have officially joined the television cast to portray important figures who arrive during the next stage of the competitive theater storyline [1]. Taku Yashiro voices Asagao Konjakutei, but Yoji Ueda takes on Hassho Tsubakiya [2]. Both appeared in the teaser [1]. Their arrival brings immediate rivalry into the dressing rooms [3].

Anna Nagase stars once more as protagonist Akane Osaki, who now performs on stage under the professional name Akane Arakawa [3]. Takuya Eguchi voices Karashi Nerimaya, Rie Takahashi plays Hikaru Koragi, and Jun Fukuyama voices Shinta Arakawa (Tohru Osaki) [2]. The school of Master Shiguma includes Nobunaga Shimazaki as Maikeru Arakawa, Chiaki Kobayashi as Koguma Arakawa, Yohei Azakami as Kyoji Arakawa, and Seiichiro Yamashita as Guriko Arakawa [1]. Akihisa Shiono voices the talented rival Kaisei Arakawa, and veteran actors Masaki Terasoma and Akio Otsuka reprise their roles as masters Shiguma Arakawa and Issho Arakawa, anchoring the senior generation of storytellers. The sprawling ensemble lets the production explore different performance styles within a single theater troupe [2].

Several high-ranking storytellers who made brief cameo appearances in the final episode of the first season will take on larger roles in the upcoming episodes. Hōchū Ōtsuka portrays Miroku Kashiwaya, and Ryōtarō Okiayu plays Shomei Tsubakiya. Hiroshi Naka joins as Enso Sanmeitei, Mutsumi Tamura voices Urara Ransaika, and Shinichirō Miki plays Ryu’un Kenputei [3]. Tomokazu Seki completes this group of veteran performers as Chocho Konjakutei [1]. These senior rakugoka represent the elite artists whom younger apprentices must study and eventually impress [3].

Television Schedule Places Akane-banashi Season 2 in Winter

The anime begins airing on TV Asahi in January 2027. The first season ran from April 4, 2026, through late June on the network’s designated “IMAnimation” block, concluding with the Karaku Cup Arc [3]. Winter 2027 provides sufficient production time [2].

International distribution for the anime established a broad streaming presence during its initial broadcast run. Full episodes streamed for free on the official “Akane-banashi Global” YouTube channel in North America and Latin America following the domestic television premiere. Netflix launched an English dub for the first two episodes on May 17, 2026, and released subsequent dubbed episodes on a regular weekly schedule. International platforms organized seasonal programming through the Crunchyroll anime release schedule for fall 2026, but this production maintained its own multi-platform distribution network across different global markets. That approach allowed viewers worldwide to follow Akane’s progression without relying on a single exclusive portal [3].

Streaming services handled broadcast access across individual countries, with aniverse carrying episodes in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and ADN handling distribution in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Anime Box streamed the show in Spain, and Anime Generation served viewers in Italy. In the Asia-Pacific region outside Korea and China, Ani-One carried the broadcast, and services like Bahamut, Line TV, and Catchplay served Taiwan, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. South Korean audiences watched on Laftel and Aniplus Channel, and playmax.mn STAR TV delivered episodes in Mongolia [3].

Storyline for the Zenza Arc

The new season transitions directly into the manga’s Zenza Arc, shifting the narrative focus from high school contests to professional theater life. TV Asahi wrote in its preview: “What you’re about to experience is nothing less than the living history of Rakugo”. Akane formally joins Shiguma’s school as Akane Arakawa [3].

Akane soon arrives at Yasaka-tei, a bustling rakugo theater where master storytellers gather every day to perform before demanding urban crowds [3]. In the strict hierarchy of the craft, she starts at the bottom rank as a zenza (opening act performer). Viz Media notes that this training phase requires “exchanging her secret lessons for formal training” and learning that “becoming a stellar rakugoka takes much more than just being good at performing”. She must prepare the stage, clean dressing rooms, look after senior masters, and earn the respect of fellow apprentices who compete for stage time. Every mistake carries consequences in front of senior performers who value etiquette as much as narrative delivery [1].

Manga Plus describes rakugo as “the ultimate form of storytelling, where everything in a story is expressed with just your body and words”. Her father failed the test. Akane watched Tohru Osaki strive to pass that shin’uchi examination before master Issho expelled him from the school, and she enters Yasaka-tei determined to master classical stories and prove the legitimacy of his art [2]. Live audiences test her skills every night [3].

Manga Origins and Industry Recognition

The anime adapts the manga series created by writer Yuki Suenaga and illustrator Takamasa Moue. Suenaga and Moue first launched the comic in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in February 2022 [1]. Shueisha published its 24th compiled book volume on October 2, 2026. English readers access chapters through Viz Media’s Shonen Jump and Shueisha’s MANGA Plus services [3].

The comic quickly attracted praise within the publishing industry for its authentic depiction of oral performance traditions. In 2023, the manga earned a nomination for the 16th Manga Taisho awards, finishing in second place behind the overall winner. It also achieved finalist standing in the shonen category for the 47th Kodansha Manga Awards. Readers followed the personal drama of apprentices learning classical monologues under demanding mentors [2]. The work also placed fourth on the male readers list in the 2023 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook. Viz Media continues to distribute print volumes in English bookstores [3].

Reviews often focus on how Suenaga captures the cadence of monologues and how Moue renders performers’ visual imagination on paper. That balance made the manga stand out in Weekly Shonen Jump. With Studio ZEXCS back in production, Akane-banashi Season 2 aims to translate that dynamic stage presence into animation when January 2027 arrives [1].
