Weekend Puzzles Await as Pikmin 4 Heads to Switch 2

Nintendo sets November 12 for Pikmin 4’s Switch 2 edition and Dandori Academy, adding weekend challenges at three difficulty levels and a global leaderboard.

Oatchi carries Pikmin 4’s tiny helpers through an alien landscape; Nintendo now has a new destination for their players, announcing a Switch 2 edition and Dandori Academy during Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct. Anime News Network reports that both arrive on November 12. The mode brings weekend challenges at three difficulty levels and a global leaderboard (a worldwide ranking). What will the Academy add to the miniature strategy adventure? [1, 2]

Pikmin 4 Gets a November Date

Nintendo has put the console edition and its new mode on the same launch calendar: Anita Tai’s September 10 report for Anime News Network places both releases on November 12, following the company’s Wednesday livestream. The announcement concerns a Switch 2 edition of the existing fourth game, which Tai describes as the series’ first new main entry in a decade. The adventure has a new appointment. Its additional mode brings a weekend schedule and competition against players elsewhere in the world. [1]

The creatures still do the work. Players grow, pluck and command Pikmin, then use the different types’ abilities to explore an unfamiliar planet and survive encounters with its predators. Nintendo’s game description, reproduced in Tai’s report, puts Oatchi alongside them, giving the canine partner jobs that include smashing obstacles and carrying Pikmin through the adventure. Each helper has particular strengths. The Academy adds challenges to a strategy game already built around choosing which companion can tackle the task ahead. [2]

Nintendo’s Switch 2 calendar also features the Zelda anniversary hardware covered by PerEXP Teamworks. Here, the immediate news concerns software: an existing Pikmin adventure, a new console edition and a mode with worldwide rankings. The leaderboard gives those weekend puzzles something beyond a finish line. [1]

Dandori Academy Adds Weekend Challenges

Dandori Academy adds puzzles and challenges at three difficulty levels, available on weekends, according to Tai’s account of Nintendo’s announcement, with a global leaderboard letting players compare their standing against others. The report does not name the tiers. It also gives no examples of individual puzzles, leaving the shape of the challenges open beyond those difficulty choices and the weekend schedule. How will Nintendo turn each completed task into a worldwide ranking? [1]

The scoring rules remain unspecified. Tai’s report confirms the leaderboard but does not explain how the mode calculates results, resolves ties or separates players across its three difficulty levels, details that will determine how comparisons work. A ranking shows where a player stands. The announcement gives that competition a November starting point, but the available account does not establish which actions earn points or whether separate leaderboards accompany the different challenge levels. [1]

Weekend availability is explicit. The report gives no opening hours, regional timetable or details about whether challenges rotate between weekends. [1]

Small Helpers, Different Jobs

Red Pikmin can handle fire. Ice Pikmin can freeze enemies and the environment. Nintendo’s description of Pikmin 4 pairs those abilities with the work of growing and commanding the creatures, making their differences central to exploration as players navigate an unfamiliar planet. Choosing the right helper matters. A group of Pikmin supplies several possible tools for dealing with obstacles and predators, while Oatchi contributes the ability to break obstacles and carry the creatures during the adventure. Nintendo sums up the scale of the action as “miniature might.” The description gives the small characters practical jobs, whether that means tolerating heat, freezing part of the surroundings or helping the group move onward. [2]

Nintendo even gives Oatchi a pronunciation guide (“oat-chee”) in the description reproduced by Anime News Network, alongside the dog’s roles in transporting Pikmin and smashing obstacles during the adventure. He has practical jobs. Those abilities belong to the game description; Tai’s account does not establish which companions each Academy challenge will use. Red Pikmin, Ice Pikmin and Oatchi explain the existing adventure without supplying a preview of an individual Academy puzzle. [2, 1]

The Academy’s specific tasks remain undescribed in the report. Examples of the base game’s abilities explain the adventure, but they cannot establish the contents of its forthcoming challenges. [1]

Which Pikmin Games Are on Switch?

Nintendo has already brought the main series to Switch through Pikmin 1+2, Pikmin 3 Deluxe and Pikmin 4, giving the original Switch releases of all four numbered games. The first pair arrived together. Tai’s report traces their HD release (high definition) to June 2023 digitally, followed by a physical release that September. Nintendo released the Deluxe version of the third game on Switch in 2020. Those are the Switch titles identified in the report’s account of the series. [1]

The series began on GameCube in 2001. Nintendo later released Pikmin 3 on Wii U in 2013, before bringing its Deluxe version to Switch and continuing the numbered series with the fourth game. Tai describes that fourth main game as ending a decade between new main entries. Switch 2 gets a dedicated edition next. For anyone asking whether Nintendo has announced a Pikmin game for Switch 2, Pikmin 4 is the answer, with November 12 still ahead at the time of the report. [1]

Other Pikmin releases followed different paths. Hey! Pikmin, a side-scrolling action adventure, reached Nintendo 3DS in Japan, North America and Europe in July 2017, taking the creatures onto Nintendo’s handheld system between the third and fourth main games. Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon GO, launched the free-to-play augmented reality game Pikmin Bloom worldwide in October 2021. Tai lists both in the series history. Neither is the dedicated Switch 2 edition announced during Wednesday’s presentation. [1]

Boxes, Downloads and an Upgrade Pack

Nintendo plans physical and digital releases for the Switch 2 edition, with an upgrade pack through the Nintendo Store and eShop, according to Anime News Network’s account of the announcement. Tai reported that preorders were available when the article appeared on September 10. Existing owners have an upgrade pack to consider. The report does not provide its price or spell out all eligibility requirements, so it offers no basis for calculating the cost of moving to the new edition. [1]

Prices remain absent from the report. Tai also gives no resolution or frame-rate figures, save-transfer instructions or subscription requirements for the leaderboard, leaving several practical questions unanswered for owners weighing a purchase. Nintendo has a named mode and a reported launch date on the table. The available account does not establish whether original Switch owners receive Dandori Academy on the same terms as Switch 2 players, or what steps the upgrade pack requires. [1]

November 12 brings the two announced releases together. Nintendo’s remaining store and mode details will need to answer the immediate questions for existing owners: what the upgrade costs, what it requires and when the first weekend challenges open. [1]
