NIS America and Japanese developer Nihon Falcom announced that the action role-playing adventure Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on February 25, 2027 [1]. The upgraded version supports up to 120 frames per second, two-player GameShare cooperative play, and Spanish text subtitles for the first time. Siliconera writer Jenni Lada and Gamereactor confirmed the announcement following a reveal trailer published on October 20, 2026 on YouTube [1, 2]. The upcoming Ys VIII Switch 2 port gives handheld audiences another way to experience Adol Christin’s island journey a decade after its original debut [1].

NIS America Confirms Ys VIII Switch 2 Release Date

NIS America published the announcement trailer on YouTube on October 20, 2026, setting the western release date for February 25, 2027 outside Japan [1, 2]. The video previewed the visual presentation. While the adventure originally reached the first Nintendo Switch worldwide in June 2018, this upcoming release is built as a native port designed specifically around the improved hardware to provide smoother combat and cooperative gameplay [1, 4]. Falcom and NIS America chose a packed winter window [3]. RPG Site editor Mikhail Madnani reported that February 2027 is already full of major role-playing game arrivals across multiple console ecosystems [5].

The publisher hasn’t announced pricing for the Switch 2 version yet. NIS America also hasn’t shared whether owners of the 2018 Switch release will receive an upgrade discount [2]. New language options will expand accessibility, introducing Spanish text with existing English and French translations for the western launch [4].

In an official press statement, NIS America said: “Experience this action JRPG classic at up to 120 FPS, or bring a friend along to cooperate in GameShare and save the day together!” [5]. The story also moves to handheld smartphones through a separate partnership. Chinese publisher Linekong Entertainment Technology is developing an abridged worldwide release called Ys VIII Mobile for Android and Apple iOS [1, 6].

Upgraded Framerates and GameShare Features

The main technical upgrade in the port centers on frame rates during fast exploration and party combat. The original Nintendo Switch version stuck around 30fps with slowdown during intense encounters, but the new release targets up to 120 FPS on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware [1, 3]. Few games deliver that level of performance. Wccftech writer Francesco De Meo said that most Switch 2 games hitting 120 FPS are titles originally developed for previous-generation consoles, such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Devil May Cry 5: Devil Hunter Edition. The boost gives Falcom’s sword combat a level of responsiveness that was impossible on PlayStation 4 and the original Switch [3].

Multiplayer support expands through the Switch 2 GameShare system. The feature lets a second player join the action role-playing campaign locally or online, including across a second console [1, 2]. Two users can cooperate to fight dangerous beasts and protect the castaway settlement without buying two game copies [2, 5].

Console publishers often rely on classic action role-playing games to bolster early console catalogs. PerEXP Teamworks previously covered third-party releases when examining major role-playing titles heading to Switch 2. Enhanced frame rates provide older adventures with a smooth visual presentation on handheld screens. Running Adol’s journey at 120 FPS lets dodges, parries, and skill combos flow naturally in ways that earlier hardware could not match [3].

Shipwreck Survivors on the Isle of Seiren

The story of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana begins with the red-haired adventurer Adol Christin traveling as a passenger aboard the Lombardia with fellow travelers, merchants, and sailors [4, 6]. The vessel departs from Xandria toward the continent of Eresia across the Gaete Sea archipelago. A colossal sea monster attacks the ship. When the beast rips through the wooden hull and sinks the vessel into rough coastal waters, Adol wakes up washed ashore on the desolate beaches of the cursed Isle of Seiren without his equipment [2, 4, 6]. He sets out to search for survivors [6].

Survival needs a secure settlement built from the ground up [2, 6]. Adol collaborates with Laxia von Roswell, an aristocratic noblewoman, and Sahad Nautilus, a seasoned fisherman, to create a sheltered refuge for castaways. Transporter Hummel Trabaldo and island native Ricotta Beldine soon join the party to scout treacherous jungle terrain [6].

The survivors soon discover that Seiren hosts ancient threats that don’t exist in civilized realms. Drawing from her father’s academic research, Laxia identifies the hostile beasts roaming the valleys as an extinct prehistoric class of animals known as Primordials. The castaways construct an escape boat to flee the island. However, their route remains blocked by the creature that sank the Lombardia. Adol’s group tracks down the aquatic monster, identifying it as a Primordial called the Oceanus, and defeats it in an offshore battle that clears the sea for their escape [6].

What Is the Lacrimosa of Dana?

While exploring the island’s interior, Adol experiences recurring dreams about Dana Iclucia, a mysterious maiden from an ancient era. Those visions lead the party north into the ruins of Eternia, a forgotten civilization whose people commanded a magical power known as Essence. The castaways discover Dana asleep within the stone sanctuary. She wakes with amnesia. As her memories return, Dana recalls that a catastrophic shower of meteorites struck Eternia long ago, producing a severe climate winter that drove her people to extinction. The downfall was orchestrated by an ancient cosmic process [6].

Dana realizes that the disaster was part of the Lacrimosa, an evolutionary reset that purges the earth’s dominant species once its era concludes. A single survivor is appointed as an immortal Warden of Evolution to oversee the extinction while Primordials repopulate the world [6].

Dana awoke in the present because a new Lacrimosa has started, targeting humanity for extinction through the return of the Primordials. The ancient order selects Adol as the next Warden of Evolution to oversee humanity’s end, but his companions refuse to surrender to fate. They fight back. Joined by Dana, the castaways become the first mortals in recorded history to actively resist the cosmic cycle and halt the Lacrimosa. When stopping the purge triggers a collapse of reality, Dana uses her remaining Essence to stabilize the world, seemingly giving her life so humanity can endure [6].

Ys VIII Switch 2 Arrives After Decade of Releases

The upcoming Ys VIII Switch 2 port arrives as the latest step in a multi-platform release history spanning a full decade [2, 6]. The game first debuted in Japan for the PlayStation Vita on July 21, 2016 [6]. It reached PlayStation 4 in 2017. Worldwide releases landed on PC via Steam and the original Nintendo Switch in June 2018, followed by cloud versions on Amazon Luna and Stadia in 2021, and PlayStation 5 in 2022 [2, 6]. Arriving on Switch 2 gives Falcom’s role-playing adventure a refreshed presence on Nintendo’s upcoming console [1].

Commercial sales data shows the game’s enduring popularity across global markets. After selling over 500,000 copies on console and PC storefronts by the end of 2018, continued interest pushed lifetime sales past 700,000 units, cementing its status as one of Falcom’s most successful releases [4, 6]. The success spurred more games. That sales momentum paved the way for the direct sequel Ys IX: Monstrum Nox in 2019 [6].

Beyond gaming consoles, the narrative expanded into literature with an official English novelization. Author Anna Kashina wrote the book adaptation, which Dragonwell Publishing released to give readers a deeper look into the island’s lore [4]. With high-framerate action and GameShare co-op scheduled for February 25, 2027, the Ys VIII Switch 2 release introduces Falcom’s island adventure to another generation of players [1, 3].
