The production committee for the Hirayasumi anime adaptation announced five new cast members on Tuesday ahead of its television debut in January 2027. Daisuke Namikawa, Yoko Hikasa, Yume Miyamoto, Yuichiro Umehara, and Japanese television announcer Yuko Naito will join the series produced by Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions and studio Production +h. The upcoming broadcast will air in Japan on the NHK General channel. It’s an important step for the slice-of-life project. [1, 2]

Five New Actors Join the Hirayasumi Anime Adaptation

The staff announced the additional voice actors through the project’s official social media channels on Tuesday. The new roles expand an ensemble centered on everyday life in Tokyo. Daisuke Namikawa steps into the cast with Yoko Hikasa, Yume Miyamoto, and Yuichiro Umehara, while Yuko Naito provides narration for the television episodes. These five performers join lead voice actors Yuma Uchida, Mayu Takahashi, and Rikako Aikawa, who were previously cast as the central household trio. Uchida plays the carefree protagonist Hiroto Ikuta, Takahashi voices his younger cousin Natsumi Kobayashi, and Aikawa plays Hanae Wada, the neighborhood grandmother whose house sets the story in motion. Together, the group brings experienced talent to the human drama. [1, 2]

Namikawa brings long voice acting experience to the project, while Miyamoto and Hikasa voice characters who balance working life and youthful hesitation. Umehara takes the role of a creative professional facing self-doubt. The production team shared a promotional image displaying all five cast members from left to right on Tuesday. That visual gives fans their first look at the broader cast that surrounds the main household. It doesn’t rely on flashy designs, matching the understated tone of the original manga. [1, 2]

Announcer Yuko Naito takes on narration duties as a distinct casting choice for television. Japanese viewers often recognize Naito from her news broadcasting background. Her voice will guide audiences through the quiet shifts in the characters’ daily routines as winter approaches. [1, 2]

New Character Roles in the Neighborhood Story

Each newly revealed character connects to a specific facet of life in contemporary Tokyo. These roles capture the personal struggles that Keigo Shinzo explores in the manga. Daisuke Namikawa plays Hideki Noguchi, Hiroto’s high school friend who now works at a trendy furniture store. Noguchi represents Hiroto’s lasting link to his teenage years, contrasting the protagonist’s casual lifestyle with the demands of steady retail work. Yoko Hikasa voices Yomogi Tachibana, a career woman who feels empty after doing nothing but work day after day. Tachibana’s storyline captures the exhaustion of modern office routines and gives her encounters with the relaxed household special meaning. [2]

Yume Miyamoto plays Akari Yokoyama, an art student who becomes Natsumi’s first-ever friend as Natsumi navigates her move to the city. Moving from the countryside to attend art school in Tokyo leaves 18-year-old Natsumi feeling isolated, and her budding friendship with Yokoyama provides an anchor for her creative ambitions. Meanwhile, Yuichiro Umehara voices Ryo Ishikawa, a novelist in a minor slump since his books don’t sell like they did during his debut. Ishikawa’s creative doubts mirror the artistic anxieties that Natsumi faces as she studies. [1, 2]

Viz Media summarizes Hiroto’s carefree mindset in its English release synopsis: “At 29 years old, carefree Hiroto Ikuta doesn’t have a girlfriend, a full-time job, or a plan for the future—and he couldn’t be happier.” His breezy attitude gives surrounding friends a warm place to rest. [1, 2]

Production Staff and Studio Behind the Project

Animation studio Production +h. produces the series under the direction of Kei Suezawa, who also serves as series composer and scriptwriter for the television run. Suezawa previously directed Fate/Grand Order The Movie Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot – Wandering: Agateram and worked on FLCL Progressive before joining this quiet neighborhood narrative. Handling direction, series composition, and screenplay duties gives Suezawa close creative control over how the manga’s episodic pacing translates to the television screen. He guides both emotional pacing and character movement. It’s a demanding task, but having one creator guide the script and visual staging helps maintain narrative continuity in every episode. [1, 2]

Naoyuki Asano designs the animated characters and adapts Shinzo’s expressive line art for screen animators. Asano’s earlier design credits include Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Urusei Yatsura, and Mr. Osomatsu, productions known for loose character movement and expressive facial comedy. Background art director Mika Nishimura brings visual depth from her work on Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction and Typhoon Noruda. Her painted settings will establish the quiet neighborhood where Hiroto lives. [1, 2]

Music composer Kaori Sawada handles the musical score, having composed soundtracks for live-action dramas such as What Did You Eat Yesterday? and When Spring Comes. Sawada’s background in television drama suits the slice-of-life tone, where acoustic melodies support quiet dialogue. Similar creative care marks other upcoming projects, including the Shin Oishinbo anime confirmation that also pairs experienced voice talent with seasoned television animators. Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions Co., Ltd. co-produces the series with Production +h. to support steady distribution. [1, 2]

Hirayasumi Anime Release Date and Broadcast Schedule

The television anime will premiere in January 2027 on Japan’s NHK General channel, which places the adaptation on a public broadcast network. When is Hirayasumi anime coming out for international audiences? Viz Media confirmed an English release scheduled for 2027, though the company hasn’t named a streaming partner yet. [1, 2]

North American fans got an early preview when Viz Media and Japan Society hosted a world premiere screening in New York City on October 7. The event screened the completed first episode at Japan Society’s auditorium, presenting Suezawa’s visual direction and the opening dynamic between Hiroto and his elderly neighbor Hanae Wada. Overseas screenings ahead of Japanese television broadcasts remain uncommon for quiet slice-of-life anime, showing Viz Media’s strong confidence in the property. Attendees welcomed the visual warmth of the neighborhood backgrounds and the gentle vocal performance delivered by Yuma Uchida. The screening proved that the quiet story translates well to international viewers who appreciate grounded character drama. [2]

The anime follows a live-action television adaptation that aired on NHK in November 2025. That live-action series was announced in July 2025 with the animated adaptation and streamed on Prime Video between November and December 2025. Producing both live-action and animated versions shows Shogakukan’s faith in Shinzo’s narrative world. Viewers who watched the live-action episodes can look forward to seeing how Production +h. interprets the same quiet scenes through animation. It’s a rare double adaptation that gives the story two distinct visual forms. [1, 2]

Manga Origins and Accolades Behind Hirayasumi

Keigo Shinzo launched the Hirayasumi manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine on April 26, 2021. The series quickly built a loyal following thanks to its patient depiction of human relationships and gentle humor. As of April 30, Shogakukan released the manga’s 10th compiled book volume in Japan. The work has reached over 1.1 million copies in circulation worldwide, proving steady reader interest in a quiet slice-of-life title. Shogakukan publishes new chapters regularly in its weekly magazine and keeps readers invested in Hiroto’s easygoing life as he tends to his inherited home and chats with neighborhood friends. It’s a gentle rhythm that continues to attract new readers. [1, 2]

The manga earned strong recognition within the Japanese publishing industry shortly after its serial launch. In January 2022, the series received a nomination for the 15th Manga Taisho awards, one of Japan’s most notable honors for ongoing graphic work. In December 2022, it ranked 18th in the 2023 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook. The title earned a nomination for the 27th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in February 2023, followed by a nomination for Best Continuing Manga Series at the 2nd American Manga Awards. [2]

Beyond Hirayasumi, publisher Denpa licensed Shinzo’s Holiday Junction, a collection of seven one-shot manga that Shogakukan first shipped in Japan in July 2016. That book gave Western readers an early look at Shinzo’s short stories. With 10 compiled manga volumes in print, fans won’t have to wait long for the animated adaptation to arrive in January 2027.
