The upcoming Matsurika Kanriden anime television adaptation has added voice actors Takuya Sato and Hiyori Kono to its royal cast ahead of its planned broadcast debut in January 2027 [1]. Sato takes on the role of Emperor Akatsuki of Sekisō, while Kono will voice his empress, Lian Lo, as the story ventures beyond the imperial palace of Bai Lou [2]. Kadokawa and the series production committee announced the additions through a newly released character visual showing both rulers in ceremonial court attire [1].

In the promotional visual shared by production partners, Akatsuki stands on the right side while Lian Lo appears on the left in ceremonial palace robes [1]. Akatsuki rules the kingdom of Sekisō, and Lian serves at his side as his imperial consort. Their presence introduces an outside court dynamic to the story [2].

Both actors arrive with recognizable roles from recent television anime lineups. Takuya Sato voiced the working protagonist Sasaki in Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, where he voiced the slice-of-life comedy’s lead. Hiyori Kono portrays Tan Otori in Even the Student Council Has Its Holes!, handling an energetic student council character. Producers haven’t released voice clips for Akatsuki or Lian Lo yet, but the visual pairing confirms how their character designs mirror the presence seen in the original light novel illustrations so viewers can see the royal couple who interact with the central palace staff [1].

The anime is scheduled to premiere on Japanese television in January 2027 as Rinne Ishida’s fantasy series arrives on the screen for the first time. Staff members haven’t set an exact calendar broadcast date for the weekly time slot, though television networks across Japan plan to air episodes during the winter 2027 anime season starting in January [1].

Production Team and Music for the Matsurika Kanriden Anime

Animation production for the Matsurika Kanriden anime is in the hands of Maho Film, the studio behind several recent light novel adaptations. Yuichi Nakazawa directs the series. Working with Nakazawa is chief director Takeshi Mori, an experienced filmmaker who directed My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer, and the two directors guide the studio through the detailed palace settings. Kadokawa began rolling out teaser artwork earlier in the cycle, gradually revealing character profiles as animation work moves forward [1].

Touko Machida is handling series composition, writing the script structure that adapts the early novel volumes into television episodes. Manami Inose designs the characters [1]. The adaptation was first announced on October 1, 2025, so the creative staff had more than a year of lead time before its planned winter broadcast [3].

Takurō Iga composed the score [3]. Rock band KANA-BOON performs the anime’s opening theme song, titled “Hana Hanashi”, which translates as “Flower Talk” [2]. The title nods to Matsurika’s name, as the kanji characters for her name refer to jasmine blossoms [3]. Production announcements for literary adaptations often highlight theme music early, much like the updates seen in our coverage of Hirayasumi anime adaptation casting updates [1]. It’s an energetic track that sets an upbeat tone for a heroine who relies on her wit rather than royal birth to survive court politics [2].

Core Palace Characters and Returning Cast Members

At the center of the story stands Kō Matsurika, voiced by voice actress Rie Takahashi [1]. Matsurika is a bright commoner who entered imperial service as a humble palace maid before her quick thinking earned her an official court rank [3]. Opposite her is Emperor Hakuyō of Bai Lou, voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki [1]. Hakuyō rules Bai Lou firmly. Both Takahashi and Shimazaki voiced these lead figures in earlier promotional audio dramas, which gave them years of familiarity with their characters before stepping into the television anime recording booths [3].

The imperial administration includes several notable court officials who test Matsurika’s resolve as she takes on palace duties. Takeo Otsuka voices Tenka Rei, also known as Rei Tenga, a capable civil official who observes her work closely. Kotaro Nishiyama joins the roster as Shisei Ho, while Sho Komura lends his voice to Shunsetsu Sho [1].

In Ishida’s novels, these court officers form a demanding circle of colleagues around Hakuyō, each handling different branches of palace governance. It isn’t an easy environment for an outsider, so Matsurika must prove her clerical competence with every new assignment. Their vocal dynamic reflects Hakuyō’s playful prodding and Matsurika’s resolute responses [3].

Story Setting of the Matsurika Kanriden Anime

The story behind the Matsurika Kanriden anime unfolds as a romantic fantasy steeped in the clerical aesthetics of imperial Chinese history [2]. Matsurika began life as an ordinary commoner with no noble bloodline or political backing to protect her [3]. She has a photographic memory [1]. She can recall documents, names, and complex records after reading them just once. That sharp intellect catches the attention of the palace’s head lady-in-waiting, setting off a chain of events that alters her entire life [3]. Viewers will see how the newly introduced rulers from Sekisō fit into the wider diplomatic ties that challenge the heroine [2].

The central plot begins when the head lady-in-waiting instructs Matsurika to serve as a stand-in practice partner for a rehearsal matchmaking meeting arranged for the son of a noble family, only for Emperor Hakuyō himself to arrive in disguise [2]. During their meeting, a bag-snatching incident disrupts the palace grounds. Matsurika reacts with swift composure, using her observational recall to resolve the chaos and impress the young ruler on the spot [3]. Hakuyō falls in love with her at first sight, yet he refuses to make her a mere royal favorite without public merit [2].

Rather than simply taking her into his private chambers, Hakuyō challenges Matsurika to sit for the state’s scholar-official civil service exam, as passing the competitive imperial examination is the only way a commoner can enter the government bureaucracy as a legitimate official [2]. The premise earned the series its reputation among Japanese readers as a “Chinese Cinderella story” [1].

Publishing History for the Novels and Manga

Author Rinne Ishida created the novel series alongside illustrator Izumi, launching the work under Kadokawa’s Enterbrain B’s-LOG Bunko imprint on July 15, 2017 [1]. The Japanese title translates literally as The Tale of the Scholar-Official Matsurika [3]. The original light novel line has enjoyed steady popularity in Japan, releasing its 19th volume on October 15, 2026 [2].

In August 2018, manga artist Waka Takase launched a comic adaptation of the novels in Akita Shoten’s Monthly Princess magazine. Takase’s manga reached its 12th collected tankōbon volume in October 2025, wrapping up the first major story arc. After a brief hiatus, the manga’s second part began serialization in May 2026, continuing to illustrate Matsurika’s rise through the civil bureaucracy while Ishida built the fantasy world through intricate political treaties between rival kingdoms like Bai Lou and Sekisō [2]. Takase’s expressive artwork gave visual form to Ishida’s palace chambers and costumes, helping the franchise build a loyal readership among shōjo manga fans [3].

The franchise’s reach extends well beyond the main storyline through spin-off works [1]. Ishida penned a spin-off light novel series titled 13-sai no Tanjobi, Kogo ni Narimashita (At Age 13, I Became Empress), which ran for 10 volumes between October 15, 2018, and October 15, 2024, under the B’s-LOG Bunko imprint. That spin-off inspired its own manga adaptation illustrated by Mito Aoi in Monthly Princess, which compiled its 10th tankōbon volume in September 2026 [3]. Counting both print and digital editions, the series has surpassed 2.68 million copies in circulation as of October 15, 2026 [2]. Broadcasts begin in January 2027 [1].
