Solo Leveling Anime Faces New 2027 Rivals as Movie Plans Advance

With Solo Leveling: Beyond the System in development at A-1 Pictures, new action anime adaptations like Kagurabachi and Eleceed aim to replicate the hit franchise’s global streaming success.

Solo Leveling anime set streaming records during its second television run, pushing Crunchyroll servers to their capacity as weekly episodes debuted. Aniplex and Crunchyroll confirmed in July 2026 that the story will expand into movie theaters with Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, produced by returning animation studio A-1 Pictures [2]. As work on that feature film continues, several upcoming action adaptations are preparing to challenge its dominance across the global anime landscape. A new competition begins [1].

Why Solo Leveling Anime Captured Global Audiences

Sung Jinwoo’s transformation from a weak hunter into an overwhelming force turned the series into a major draw on Crunchyroll. The second season collected over 600,000 reviews on the streaming site, placing it ahead of older hits like One Piece as weekly traffic repeatedly strained server capacity. Viewers tuned in every week. That response showed how much audiences enjoy a steady, well-paced rise to power [1].

Many fans often ask why Solo Leveling anime is Japanese when the source material originated as an online web novel and comic. The television adaptation was produced by Japanese animation house A-1 Pictures, with Shigeru Murakoshi, Shingo Irie, and Fuka Ishii writing scripts under the direction of Tatsuya Sasaki and Toru Hamasaki. Japanese television networks (Tokyo MX and BS11) broadcast the episodes alongside Gunma TV and Tochigi TV before the series streamed to international subscribers on Crunchyroll. Voice actors Taito Ban as Sung Jinwoo and Genta Nakamura as Yoo Jinho anchored the voice cast throughout the television broadcast. The adaptation found its audience. It’s a production model that helped the hunter story reach millions of overseas viewers [1].

Why did that growth happen so quickly? Jinwoo doesn’t simply overpower monsters in combat; he studies every battle carefully, collects rare loot, and climbs ranks by following strict video game leveling rules. Crunchyroll previously launched a Crunchyroll clothing line for Solo Leveling, proving the property’s retail appeal among fans. Underdog stories resonate with audiences [1].

Webtoon Contenders

Several webtoon adaptations are preparing to enter that same arena. Leading the pack is Eleceed, which arrives on Crunchyroll in early 2027. The plot follows Jiwoo Seo, an isolated high school student who hides his supernatural speed until he rescues a wounded street cat that surprisingly speaks like an articulate adult human. That cat turns out to be Kayden Break, a powerful fighter in disguise [1].

Jiwoo steps into a dangerous hidden society of fighters who control lethal powers. The combat in Eleceed centers around speed, impact, and constant movement, demanding high animation standards to convince viewers during monumental fight sequences. Fans have waited years to see Jiwoo and Kayden in motion on Crunchyroll. The test begins soon [1].

Another contender with close creative ties to the genre is Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, featuring artwork from REDICE Studio. Its protagonist, Kim Dokja, spends years reading an obscure web novel titled Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World, becoming the only reader to finish the final chapter. When that fictional world actually becomes reality, Dokja uses his memory of every plot development to keep himself and others alive. Unlike Jinwoo, Dokja doesn’t rely on brute physical power to win his life-or-death battles. His strength comes from sharp intellect, exploiting game rules and status menus to outwit foes who possess far greater destructive capability than him. Dokja fights with his mind. It’s a tactical approach that could easily attract fans of hunter dungeon strategy [1].

Dungeons, Towers, and New Power Systems

Tower climbing and dungeon crawling are central to modern action anime. SSS-Class Revival Hunter explores that structure through Gongja Kim, an underdog hunter who looks up to Sooha Yoo, the famed Flame Emperor. When Gongja sees Sooha commit murder, the Flame Emperor kills him on the spot. That blow triggers Gongja’s copied skill, Regression, sending his mind 24 hours back into the past with all memories and abilities completely intact [1].

Gongja wakes in the past with his power intact, climbing a mysterious Tower that hands out Skill Cards to ranked hunters. That climb resembles Jinwoo’s trial in the Double Dungeon, where surviving near death opened the door to rapid growth. A playful twist on dungeon progression appears in Reincarnation In The Game World Dankatsu, where player Zephyrus is reborn inside an RPG boasting 1,021 job classes (and 400 possible endings). Zephyrus enrolls in Labyrinth Academy, exploits optimal party builds, and clears unconquered dungeons with encyclopedic game knowledge. It’s a team game. Like Jinwoo, Zephyrus finds clever cheats to stay ahead [1].

Darker magic defines Necromancer Isekai, following a reborn peasant named Matteo who becomes a spoiled noble grandchild gifted with magical power that surpasses every known record. Matteo commands necromancy so completely that no dragon resists his taming. Jinwoo also commanded the dead before rising to Shadow Monarch. Spinoffs expand that lore, with Netmarble detailing Solo Leveling Karma combat and story at Tokyo Game Show. Fans can’t get enough of necromancer heroes [1].

Fresh Combat Styles in 2027

Not all rising heroes lean on magical stat bars. In The Boxer, legendary coach K spots Yu, a bullied teenager standing lifeless while peers beat him, noticing his uncanny natural ability to evade punches. K trains the rookie to perfect his defensive movements, preparing him for the professional boxing ring. Yu climbs the ranks fast. He asks only if hitting people is fun, letting his fists do all the talking [1].

Other anime also bring fresh combat styles to screens. Magical Buffs: The Support Caster is Stronger Than He Realized! debuts in January 2027, following Wim Strauss after an ungrateful adventure party abandons him. Wim joins his childhood friend Heidemarie and discovers that his support magic can dominate the frontline. Meanwhile, Kagurabachi premieres in April 2027, centering on Chihiro Rokuhira after sorcerers from Hishaku kill his swordsmith father Kunishige and steal six Enchanted Blades from their workshop. Chihiro takes up Enten, the seventh blade, seeking retribution against the sorcerer ring across the country. Chihiro fights for family. He swings steel instead of commanding shadows, but his journey of vengeance and growth matches Jinwoo’s appeal [1].

Bleaker themes emerge in Fool Night, where thick clouds block sunlight and desperate citizens turn into plants for government payouts. Toshiro Kamiya accepts that floromorph trial to pay for his ill mother’s medicine, gaining the power to hear plant voices while surrendering his human body to survive. High school action also expands in Teenage Mercenary, where former child soldier Ijin Yu protects his family after battlefield combat. Jinwoo’s shadow stretches far [1].

Solo Leveling Anime at the Box Office

Can any action sequel match that momentum? Solo Leveling anime faces its biggest commercial test in cinemas instead of on weekly television streaming services. Crunchyroll and Aniplex announced Solo Leveling: Beyond the System at Anime Expo 2026, keeping A-1 Pictures as the returning animation studio behind the continuation of Jinwoo’s story. Its theatrical release date hasn’t been confirmed. A teaser visual and concept video gave audiences their first look [2].

The movie continues after Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, with speculation pointing toward the Return to the Double Dungeon storyline. That arc brings Jinwoo back to Cartenon Temple to face the Architect who created the mysterious System in the first place. A clash with the Architect would strike at the root of Jinwoo’s powers, testing his wits rather than just testing his brute strength. Following the first Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film, which set up Infinity Castle Part 2 after battles with Akaza, Doma, and Kaigaku, the second installment from Ufotable advances the Hashira against Upper Rank One Kokushibo and Muzan Kibutsuji. Upper Rank Two Doma and castle-controlling Nakime also enter the fray. The showdown begins in 2027 [2].

Box office expectations for anime films now sit at high levels. According to ORICON NEWS, the first Infinity Castle movie surpassed 100 billion yen in worldwide ticket sales by November 2025, becoming the first Japanese production to reach that milestone. Beyond the System must prove that Sung Jinwoo can command global theatrical ticket sales just as effectively as he commanded streaming views across Crunchyroll’s digital catalog. The box office awaits him [2].
