After 33 Years, Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon Comes West

Square Enix launched Torneko’s original dungeon adventure in the West on September 9, bringing the 1993 game back as a Classic HD remaster.

A merchant’s hunt for shop stock reaches Nintendo Direct: Square Enix announced Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon in its Classic HD edition on September 9, 2026. The publisher released it that same day. The original adventure dates to 1993. Anime News Network and Siliconera report that Torneko’s Great Adventure has now reached the West through a remaster for Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The 33-year wait ends with a same-day launch. [1, 2]

Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon Arrives Immediately

Square Enix slipped the reveal into the September Nintendo Direct’s sizzle reel, Siliconera reports. No long countdown followed.

Anime News Network’s Alex Mateo reports that the publisher released the game for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam on the announcement date. The revival reaches well beyond the hardware featured in Nintendo’s broadcast. [1, 2] The calendar also includes Prinny Party on November 11, while Torneko is already available.

The full game is out. Square Enix accompanied the release with an announcement trailer and an opening movie trailer, according to Anime News Network. Its report also carries promotional video material. The full English title is Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-. The familiar Dragon Quest name introduces a returning protagonist whose ambitions revolve around the stock in his shop. [1, 4] The new Apothecary Diaries game brings five curses; Torneko returns to a 1993 dungeon adventure built around a merchant hunting stock.

The shop comes first. Torneko wants valuables to sell, and Siliconera’s account of the story sends him toward a rumored dungeon containing a legendary treasure. Square Enix’s other Dragon Quest announcement concerned a playable demo. Torneko’s September release and the forthcoming Monsters adventure have different launch schedules. Before that next game arrives, the merchant has business of his own. [1, 2]

A Shopkeeper Goes Treasure Hunting

Torneko comes from Dragon Quest IV, which appeared on NES and Famicom. He remains a merchant after that adventure’s events, according to the two launch reports. He has combat experience now. Siliconera’s Jenni Lada describes him heading out with his family to investigate the mystery dungeon, hoping its monsters and deeper reaches will lead him to goods for his shop and the rare treasure rumored to lie within. [1, 2]

His livelihood drives the expedition. Selling what he finds gives Torneko a reason to keep exploring. The legendary item supplies a goal beyond his next piece of stock. Siliconera identifies the game as a Dragon Quest IV spin-off and a roguelike (a dungeon-adventure genre). The report ties its premise directly to Torneko’s life after the earlier game. The familiar merchant carries his occupation into the starring role. [2]

Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon starts with a character who already has a trade, a family and experience from another adventure. A treasure rumor draws those parts of his life together. For Western players encountering this original outing for the first time, the premise also provides a route into a story that later continued on PlayStation. How does the newly released remaster fit into that older sequence? [1, 2]

The Road Back to 1993

Chunsoft’s original game debuted in Japan in September 1993 on Super Famicom under the name Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon. September 2026 brings its Western arrival 33 years later. Anime News Network supplies the original release month and platform. Siliconera identifies Chunsoft and connects the newly remastered adventure to the later Torneko: The Last Hope. Western audiences can now encounter the original chapter through the Classic HD edition. [1, 2, 5]

Torneko had traveled overseas before. Siliconera reports that Torneko: The Last Hope appeared worldwide on PlayStation (PS1), with a Game Boy Advance release in Japan. Its events follow the adventure Square Enix has now brought back. The first-Western-release description consequently applies to this original game; Torneko’s later starring role had already crossed that boundary. For players who know The Last Hope, the new release opens the preceding chapter of his dungeon adventures. [2]

Square Enix has revived the earlier game as Classic HD. Siliconera describes it as a remaster with no new content. [2]

Which Versions Have Launched?

Nintendo Switch owners are included. For searches asking whether Dragon Quest Heroes is on Switch, the specific title here is Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-. Both launch reports list Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC. Anime News Network names Xbox Series X|S and Steam explicitly. Siliconera likewise reports a worldwide September 9 launch. Its platform wording names Xbox Series X without separately spelling out Series S. Neither supplied article provides regional prices or a detailed comparison of how the Nintendo editions perform. The launch coverage supports the platform list without establishing a technical advantage for one version. [1, 2]

Classic HD identifies the edition. Siliconera describes the release as a remaster that “doesn’t feature any new content.” Its report gives no resolution, frame-rate or control specifications. The HD label alone cannot settle those questions. Gematsu also lists an announcement, but only its RSS excerpt was available for this report. Its headline’s additional mobile-platform references do not establish verified iOS or Android availability here. [2, 3]

Another Dungeon Adventure Gets a Demo

Square Enix also released a trailer announcing a playable demo for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. Anime News Network reports the announcement. The full game follows on December 3. Mateo lists Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and Windows. Another Dragon Quest adventure reaches much of the same hardware lineup later in the year. [1]

Bianca and Nera lead that game, with Debora also appearing; all three come from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. More than 500 monsters feature in The Withered World, the report says. Its Japanese title is Dragon Quest Monsters 4: Kareki no Kuni no Bianca Flora (Bianca and Flora in the Withered World). Flora is Nera’s Japanese name, which accounts for the different character name in that title. [1]

Square Enix’s announcement trailer and opening movie offer the next look at the merchant’s return. The Monsters demo introduces the adventure due in December. Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon is the complete game in this pair of announcements. For its individual editions, regional prices and platform-specific performance remain open questions in the available launch reporting. Neither Anime News Network nor Siliconera supplies the specifications needed to compare them. [1, 2, 4]
