Kojima Productions released the first teaser trailer and production staff details for its upcoming anime series Death Stranding Isolations during a studio anniversary event in Tokyo on Friday. The animated project expands the world of the original video game into an original narrative set after the reconnection of North America. Streaming rights belong to Disney, with a premiere planned for 2027 on Disney+ and Hulu. It coincides with Kojima Productions’ tenth anniversary, arriving one year after the initial project reveal [4].
Death Stranding Isolations Teaser Trailer Details
The teaser video debuted during the Beyond the Strand exhibition at Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo [4]. The clip opens with a cryptic tagline: “My mom became a crater.” Taglines rarely describe voidouts so bluntly. Viewers see a lone trailer home sitting inside a vast crater as an unnamed young girl sleeps inside. A shadowed figure approaches her before the scene cuts to black [5].
Her rest breaks as dark figures resembling BTs emerge from the soil [5]. In the game world, strange cataclysms called voidouts occur when the dead collide with the living, leaving massive craters in the landscape. Instead of following Sam’s continental delivery route, the television anime focuses on this isolated girl as she cuts ties with the outside world and embraces complete solitude after losing her mother in a catastrophic voidout blast [1]. She soon grows to prefer that lonely life, but chance encounters launch her onto a path across the fractured wasteland. Kojima Productions stated that Death Stranding Isolations tells an original narrative separate from the video game installments [4].
New promotional artwork accompanied the video, showing the young protagonist against a stark background [3]. Fans pointed out that the opening line echoes the bizarre voidout phenomena originally introduced to players during the PlayStation 4 debut of Death Stranding in November 2019 [2]. The teaser is brief, but it shows that the television series relies on hand-drawn 2D animation rather than computer-generated models [4].

New Characters and the Post-Connection Setting
The plot unfolds in North America shortly after protagonist Sam Bridges finishes connecting cities through the Chiral Network [4]. That continental network restores contact between scattered underground shelters, but the newly formed connection also brings unforeseen consequences that disrupt daily life across the fractured American frontier [1]. Sam’s network reconnected major population centers, but people living outside the system still face daily peril [4].
A group of new figures moves through this reshaped land on paths that diverge from Bridges and its couriers [1]. The lineup introduces an elderly figure who links survivors by unseen means, an armed fighter trapped in endless warfare, and an angry youth grappling with a harsh existence [4]. These characters cross paths with the girl, pulling her away from her isolated home and thrusting her into an unfamiliar landscape [1].
Norman Reedus does not appear. Instead, the story follows a young man and woman navigating survival across open territory without high-grade weaponry, specialized vehicles, or institutional support from the Bridges organization as they confront the strange aftermath of catastrophic explosions [2]. The original games focused on rebuilding infrastructure, but the anime asks how survivors respond when they reject mandatory connections. Every interpersonal bond carries direct physical risks from surrounding supernatural hazards, forcing these travelers to make difficult choices about whom to trust [4].

Animation Team at E&H Production
Japanese animation studio E&H Production is producing the series under director Takayuki Sano. Sano previously worked as an episode animation director on Attack on Titan: The Final Season and the action series Bullet/Bullet [3]. This production is his first time in the lead directorial role, and E&H Production is also handling animation for Ninja Kamui and the upcoming Magic Knight Rayearth project [1].
Director Takayuki Sano addressed the pressure of the adaptation. “One of the unique abilities of entertainment is its power to enhance the spirituality of those who consume it, and I think this is something that Mr. Kojima’s works have always achieved. As a result, I approached this production with an exceptionally strong sense of duty and responsibility, knowing that no matter what, I needed to accomplish the same thing,” said Takayuki Sano [4]. Hand-drawn frames depict both subtle character emotions and the bleak wilderness of North America [2].
Illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov provided the original character designs for the animated project [3]. Kuvshinov previously handled character designs for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and worked on Scott Pilgrim Takes Off [5]. Character designer Sayaka Koiso is adapting those concepts for production, and Yann Le Gall serves as color script and art director, Ami Kutsuna manages color design, and Jumi Lee leads compositing [3].

Screenplay and Creative Leadership
Novelist Tow Ubukata is supervising series composition and writing the complete script for the anime, bringing three decades of narrative experience across published novels, video game storylines, and serialized television projects to the production [3]. The literary pedigree is clear. His speculative fiction background fits the philosophical setting [4].
Born in Gifu in 1977, author Tow Ubukata debuted as a writer in 1996 during his university years when his work Kuroi Kisetsu won Gold at the Sneaker Taisho Award. In 2003, his cyberpunk story Mardock Scramble earned the 24th Nihon SF Taisho Award, making his name in Japanese science fiction. He followed that success in 2010 when Tenchi Meisatsu earned the Booksellers’ Award, before his 2012 novel Mitsukuni-den claimed the Futaro Yamada Award. His literary catalog also spans recent projects like Activator, Project Darkness, and the Mardock Anonymous novel series [4]. In the anime industry, Ubukata wrote scripts for Ghost in the Shell Arise, Psycho-Pass 2, and Bye Bye, Earth, which showed his skill with dark, complex settings [3].
Hideo Kojima serves as executive producer to guide lore consistency [1]. Editing is handled by Keisuke Yanagi, and Tomohiko Kan manages the 3D department while Shūhei Abe directs the complete sound design package. Kojima first revealed that an animated adaptation was in development during an interview with Vogue Japan in May 2025, confirming early creative discussions [3].

Where to Stream Death Stranding Isolations
Disney holds global streaming rights. Broadcast distribution will occur on Disney+ globally, with United States distribution handled through Hulu in 2027. This television release forms one part of a multi-project effort to bring Kojima’s universe to theatrical and streaming screens worldwide [1]. Kojima Productions is expanding its storytelling after ten years of independent studio operations [4].
A separate feature film with the working title Death Stranding: Mosquito is also underway at ABC Animation Studio with director Hiroshi Miyamoto. Screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski is penning that script, which also follows an original storyline. Meanwhile, director Michael Sarnoski is writing and directing a live-action film adaptation backed by Hammerstone Studios and distributor A24, with Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster producing through Square Peg. Kojima Productions set up a film and music division in Los Angeles back in 2021 to support these Hollywood productions [3].
These screen adaptations arrive as the video game series expands its audience. As of June 2026, the games have reached a cumulative player base of over 27 million players worldwide across PlayStation consoles, PC, and Xbox Series X/S [4]. With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launching on PlayStation 5 in June 2025, the 2027 arrival of Death Stranding Isolations gives audiences a fresh perspective on a fractured world [2]. Visitors to the Beyond the Strand exhibition at Azabudai Hills Gallery can inspect early production archives through December 20, 2026 [4].
