Author Nigozyu revealed in the afterword of the 14th novel volume on October 23, 2026, that the mystery series The Detective Is Already Dead will end with volume 15. The books debuted under Kadokawa’s MF Bunko J imprint in November 2019 with illustrations by Umibōzu, earning early recognition before expanding into manga and television anime adaptations. Yen Press handles the English translation of the books, while the second season of the animated adaptation began airing in October 2026. The announcement gives readers a clear timeline for how the main story will conclude [1].

Series Finale Announced in Volume 14

Kadokawa released the 14th novel volume in Japanese bookstores on Friday, October 23, 2026. Inside that book, author Nigozyu confirmed that volume 15 will serve as the final installment of the main storyline. Nigozyu didn’t announce a release date for volume 15 yet [1]. The author’s note clarifies that the adventure of Kimihiko Kimizuka and Siesta is entering its planned resolution after volume 13 arrived on July 25, 2025, with 328 pages under the MF Bunko J imprint [6]. Delivery of volume 14 took fifteen months.

The announcement marks another planned conclusion for Kadokawa’s publishing lineup after Kadokawa concluded the TsureKano light novel series with volume 14. In the case of The Detective Is Already Dead, the note focuses on wrapping up the central storyline instead of ending the wider setting outright, leaving open the possibility that extra side stories or artbooks might arrive once the main plot wraps up [3]. Readers can count on a deliberate finish. Media Factory continues to manage the property under the MF Bunko J label [4].

Nigozyu shared that concluding the narrative in volume 15 felt like the right creative choice for the characters [1]. Kadokawa supported that vision from the start. It gives the author room to answer lingering plot points before closing the final chapter.

The Detective Is Already Dead Mystery Premise

The story grew from a simple prompt that Nigozyu wrote down before developing the full plot, beginning with the thought “Is there a detective on the plane?”. Kimihiko Kimizuka calls himself a trouble magnet. The 18-year-old student constantly gets caught in street crimes, hostage dilemmas, and police questioning [5]. During his third year of junior high school, kidnappers forced him to carry a mysterious suitcase onto an international flight, where he met Siesta, a self-proclaimed legendary detective equipped with a musket and seven items with magical abilities. Siesta recruited Kimihiko as her assistant in a secret conflict against an underworld group called SPES, leading to three years of global travels before she died in action [4].

Yen Press describes the premise through Kimihiko’s perspective: “When the story begins without its hero Kimihiko Kimizuka has always been a magnet for trouble and intrigue.”. Yen Press adds that Kimihiko thought his days of investigation had ended: “Now he’s returned to a life that is normal and tepid by comparison, knowing the adventure must be over. After all, detective is already dead.” [1]. Nagisa Natsunagi changes that assumption. When the high school classmate approaches him with a request that reopens older cases, the plot alternates between memories of Siesta and ongoing mysteries in modern Tokyo. Idol Yui Saikawa and assassin Charlotte Arisaka Anderson soon join the investigation [5]. Each character carries a connection to Siesta, forcing Kimihiko to keep searching for the truth even as he grieves his fallen partner [4].

English Translation Milestones at Yen Press

Yen Press licensed the light novel series for North American distribution and published the first volume on June 29, 2021 [4]. It maintained a regular release rhythm for English readers over the past five years. Yen Press shipped the 12th volume in English on August 11, 2026, keeping the localized run just two books behind the Japanese schedule [1]. That pace helps overseas fans stay connected to major story developments as the books advance through the Void Calendar sequence toward the Unexplored Sanctuary arc. Ten volumes are already out in English [4]. English editions include Umibōzu’s original illustrations and color inserts from the Japanese bunkobon releases [1].

The story built solid commercial support in Japan long before English translations arrived in bookstores. It won the 15th MF Bunko J Newcomer Award in 2019, which gave Nigozyu early momentum within Kadokawa’s publishing network [1]. Reader interest grew steadily, placing the series third on Oricon’s monthly light novel chart in July 2021 before it climbed to first place in August 2021. Kadokawa confirmed that total circulation passed 1,000,000 copies by July 2022. The books also earned multiple spots in the annual Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! rankings, where the series placed fourth in the bunkobon category in both 2021 and 2024. Siesta herself finished second among all female light novel characters in 2022 [4].

Kimihiko placed sixth among male characters in that 2022 guide [4]. The poll numbers showed that both leads built a loyal following.

Adaptations in Anime and Manga

Studio ENGI produced an anime adaptation directed by Manabu Kurihara, with screenwriter Deko Akao overseeing series composition to bring the opening arcs to life across 12 television episodes [5]. The anime debuted on July 4, 2021, with a one-hour broadcast special that covered the plane flight between Kimihiko and Siesta. Japanese networks including AT-X, Tokyo MX, and Sun TV aired the episodes, while Funimation and Crunchyroll handled streaming dubs and subtitled releases for international viewers [2]. Season 1 covered five novel volumes [4].

A second television season debuted on October 7, 2026, arriving just as Nigozyu shared plans for the printed finale [2]. Arata Nagai and Saki Miyashita returned as Kimihiko and Siesta. Ayana Taketatsu voices Nagisa, and Kanon Takao plays Yui [5]. Broadcasters haven’t confirmed whether this second television run will adapt the upcoming 15th volume or conclude at an earlier narrative juncture before reaching the finale [3].

Manga readers experienced the story through an adaptation illustrated by Mugiko in Monthly Comic Alive from May 27, 2020, to October 27, 2023 [5]. Kadokawa compiled Mugiko’s run into six tankobon volumes, which Yen Press published in English [2]. A second manga spinoff titled The Detective Is Already Dead: The Lost Memory, drawn by Poni, added four volumes between January 2021 and September 2022 [5].

Tanmoshi Spinoff Novels

Kadokawa commissioned spinoff light novels that place supporting cast members at the center of their own cases. Author Syusui Tsukimi and illustrator Hanekoto created Nagisa Natsunagi Still Wants to Be a High School Girl, running for two volumes from August 2023 to February 2024 under Nigozyu’s direct supervision. Yen Press licensed the books on February 28, 2025 [5]. They follow Nagisa’s high school days.

Another spinoff novel arrived on May 24, 2024, titled Charlotte wa Tada, Jiken o Tokitai. Tantei wa Mō, Shindeiru. Code:RED [5]. Hoko Hinachi and Minori Chigusa created the book to follow Charlotte Arisaka Anderson as she solves independent cases with police officer Fūbi Kase. Nigozyu supervised the story [1]. Kadokawa also published Saikawa Yui wa Demo, Aidoru de Iru in August 2024, written by Shao Senlin with illustrations by Almic to spotlight the 14-year-old idol [5]. These releases show how Kadokawa built a broader world around Siesta’s investigations [1].

With volume 15 set to conclude Kimihiko’s main journey, these side novels show that the setting can sustain adventures beyond the primary book line [3]. Readers now await the finale date. Nigozyu and Kadokawa have delivered six years of continuous stories across print, manga, and television screens [1].
