iPhone Duo Could Start at $2,000, Gurman Reports

Mark Gurman’s latest report names Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo and puts its starting price near $2,000, with October sales possible.

A $2,000 starting price hangs over the iPhone Duo hours before Apple’s September 9 event. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman says Apple’s first foldable iPhone will carry that name, with sales possible in October. The latest reports describe two colors, two screens and optional Apple Pencil support. Apple has yet to confirm those product details in the supplied coverage. What would buyers get for a phone approaching the price of two iPhones? [1, 2]

iPhone Duo Enters the Picture

Gurman’s late report changes the name attached to Apple’s long-rumored folding phone. According to Zac Hall at 9to5Mac, the company plans to call it iPhone Duo. Earlier coverage largely called the device iPhone Ultra, including reports about its development. The new name points toward the hardware Hall describes: an outer display and an inner screen that users reveal by opening the phone. [2]

Apple’s naming decision remained an open question earlier on September 8. Gizmodo’s Raymond Wong examined several possibilities, including Ultra, Duo and names borrowed from the Air family. He also cited Gurman’s earlier statement that people inside Apple called the device Ultra. An internal nickname can differ from the name on a retail box. Wong presented his own alternatives as guesses, before the newer Duo report arrived. [3]

Microsoft previously used Duo for its Surface Duo phones, as The Verge notes. Google also used the name for a communication app. Those precedents give the reported name a familiar sound, although neither establishes what Apple will choose. For now, Gurman’s reporting supplies the name. Apple still has to put it onstage, alongside the price that changed across the pre-event reports. [1]

Foldable iPhone Pricing Shifts Again

Hall’s latest 9to5Mac report puts the starting price at $1,999. The Verge rounds that figure to $2,000 and identifies 256GB of storage (space for apps, photos and files). Its account says a configuration with up to 2TB could approach $3,000. Those figures describe different storage options, so the highest reported price should not stand in for the cost of the entry model. Neither outlet provides an Apple price list in the supplied coverage. Both attribute the new details to Gurman. Buyers therefore have a reported starting point and an upper estimate, while the final configuration menu remains outside what these articles establish. [1, 2]

Earlier on September 8, Chance Miller at 9to5Mac described a different number from Bloomberg’s reporting. Apple originally targeted $1,999, he wrote, but rising component costs pushed discussions toward $2,199. Memory shortages contributed to that pressure. Hall’s later article says Apple would absorb some recent memory cost increases to retain the lower price. The two articles capture changing reported plans, rather than two confirmed prices for the same model. [2, 5]

Apple has not confirmed a retail price in these reports. The iPhone Duo figures remain pre-announcement claims.

Foldable iPhone Apps Share the Screen

Apple could give the larger inner display a job beyond showing bigger photos. The Verge says the rumored phone should run iPhone apps side by side and offer iPad-like multitasking (working across several apps). That would bring two separate app views onto the opened screen. The coverage describes expected capabilities, though it supplies no hands-on demonstration or detailed explanation of how users would arrange those windows. [1]

Hall also reports that Apple Pencil support is now expected. Earlier expectations had moved away from the feature, despite Apple having considered it. The Pencil is a stylus (a pen-shaped input device), and support would add another way to interact with the inner display. The supplied reports do not identify compatible Pencil models, accessory pricing or whether Apple would include one. [1, 2]

Gizmodo’s earlier naming discussion raises a separate hardware issue. Wong lists rumored omissions, including a telephoto camera, Face ID and the Action button. He uses those expectations to question whether Ultra would fit the device. They remain rumors within an opinion-led naming article, rather than an official specification sheet. Apple still needs to show how its proposed larger-screen experience fits beside the familiar Pro models. [3]

Foldable iPhone Took a Long Route

Apple engineers began work on a folding iPhone around 2016, according to Bloomberg reporting relayed by Miller. Tim Cook then returned from China in 2020 with renewed enthusiasm for foldable phones. He reportedly pushed hardware teams to move faster. Miller describes Cook as someone who usually avoided conceiving new products, which made his direct interest in this project stand out within the development story. [5]

Cook’s involvement reportedly helped steer the work toward a foldable iPhone instead of a foldable iPad. Bloomberg’s account, as summarized by 9to5Mac, links that choice to a push for a more mainstream product. The latest rumors now attach a name, price and possible shipping window to that phone. What does Apple’s long development effort leave buyers waiting for on launch day? [2, 5]

Gurman reports white and dark blue color options, with sales starting as early as October, according to Hall. The Verge likewise describes possible October shipping. Neither account supplies a specific day. Hall places that potential arrival a few weeks after the expected September shipment of the iPhone 18 Pro. A September reveal and an October purchase would therefore be separate moments in the reported schedule. [1, 2]

iPhone Duo Awaits Apple’s Stage

Apple’s Surprise and Shine event starts September 9 at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. Eastern), according to TechCrunch. Amanda Silberling reports that Apple prepared a YouTube livestream and will also stream through its events site. Her preview expects the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max alongside the foldable. It places the standard iPhone 18 in the following year, again as an expectation ahead of Apple’s presentation. [4]

The Verge and TechCrunch describe the event as Apple’s first iPhone launch under CEO John Ternus. TechCrunch connects that change to Tim Cook’s departure from the chief executive role. Their previews put the reported foldable at the center of the occasion. However, the iPhone Duo name, storage options and Pencil feature all still depend on pre-event reporting in these sources. [1, 4]

Viewers can follow the Apple livestream identified in TechCrunch’s event viewing guide. Watch for the base storage tier beside the price, then the availability slide. An onstage Pencil demonstration would also clarify what the rumored support actually allows. Apple has several concrete details to settle: the final name, the checkout price and when buyers can get the folding phone into their hands. [4]
