A Cat Runs an Inn as Under Mythos Slips into Madness

KADATH’s debut follows a cat searching for its mother while running a hot spring inn. Dungeon supplies, action combat and a world descending into madness drive the RPG, planned for Switch and PC in 2028.

A lone cat reaches a hot spring inn while searching for its mother in Under Mythos, and takes a job caring for the strange world’s guests. KADATH announced the dark fantasy JRPG (Japanese role-playing game) on September 10, with plans for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam in 2028, according to Noisy Pixel. Food comes from dungeon expeditions. Bringing it home means surviving action combat against creatures whose bodies have become grotesque. [1]

Under Mythos Begins at an Inn

The cat arrives with a personal purpose: finding Mother. KADATH’s story description, reproduced by Nintendo Everything, says the animal wanders into another world and discovers an inn where that realm’s inhabitants rest, then begins working there in the hope of a reunion. Guests need care. For a time, the cat spends peaceful days welcoming them, while an unpredictable disturbance starts creeping into the routine that has given the newcomer a place to stay. [2]

KADATH calls the change “A Peaceful Everyday Life That Transforms into Madness” in its feature description. The familiar world gradually becomes unstable as the story unfolds; the threat reaches into a setting that initially offers charming characters and a place to relax. The announcement leaves Mother’s whereabouts unexplained. It also leaves room for the inn’s visitors to matter beyond their first arrival, because developing the establishment brings new encounters and opens further exploration. [2]

Why dark fantasy? In KADATH’s description, the answer lies in the world changing around the cat: ordinary hospitality gives way to disturbing events, and dungeon creatures take on grotesque forms. The inn remains the reason to venture outside. Feeding its guests requires supplies from the same realm that is slipping into madness. [1, 2]

Dinner Depends on Coming Home

KADATH connects the inn to its dungeons through extraction elements (gathering resources and returning safely with them). Players venture out for food and other materials, fight the beings they encounter, then bring their haul back to support and develop the establishment. Food has a destination. The resources serve the guests, and the rewards help expand a business whose growth leads to fresh encounters and another reason to explore. [1, 2]

Combat uses action. Nintendo Everything’s published feature list explicitly describes action-based encounters with transformed beings, while Noisy Pixel reports that safe returns let players put collected materials toward developing the inn. Neither account details weapons, party composition or the consequences of a failed expedition. KADATH’s extraction label establishes the importance of getting home, but the available description does not specify inventory loss, escape timers or any multiplayer component. Those details remain open. [1, 2]

Dungeon exploration also connects the announcement with the subject of Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon coming West. Under Mythos gives its expeditions a hospitality setting: the cat gathers provisions to care for visitors. KADATH has described how the inn and dungeons feed into each other; the teaser offers an early look at those activities, with footage from a game still in development. [1]

Pokémon Designs Meet the Cthulhu Mythos

Atsuko Nishida handles character design. Noisy Pixel identifies her previous work on several Pokémon designs and reports that her Under Mythos work includes a small, cat-like interpretation of Nyarlathotep, a figure from the Cthulhu Mythos. Mother remains the protagonist’s goal. KADATH introduces the journey through a lone cat looking for a parent, while Nishida’s creature design brings a named mythological figure into the same project. The report does not identify Nyarlathotep as that wandering protagonist. [1]

Takumi Miyajima writes the scenario. Her credits include Tales of the Abyss, bringing another named RPG creator to KADATH’s debut. The announced story gives her a progression from quiet work at an inn to a realm losing its familiar shape, with the search for Mother running through the premise. KADATH has not detailed that search’s resolution in the material reproduced by the two reports. [1, 2]

Nishida’s Nyarlathotep design gives Under Mythos a concrete connection to the Cthulhu Mythos, beyond the broad dark fantasy description. The small feline form also fits the announcement’s interest in charming characters inhabiting a disturbing world. How far does that transformation reach? KADATH’s synopsis says the familiar world itself changes, and its composer describes a corresponding shift in the music. [1, 2]

The Soundtrack Turns Toward Jazz

Noriyuki Iwadare composes the music. His credits include Grandia, Lunar and Ace Attorney; according to Noisy Pixel, he says the score moves from Japanese-inspired music into faster jazz as the story grows more unstable. The change gives the descent into madness an audible component, extending KADATH’s announced progression beyond the scenario and the creatures encountered during expeditions. The report describes a musical direction without listing individual tracks or a soundtrack release date. [1]

Yoichi Miyaji founded KADATH in Tokyo. The producer previously worked on RPGs including entries in Lunar and Grandia, and Under Mythos is the new planning and production company’s first project. Miyaji and Iwadare bring credits from two of the same RPG series to the debut, while Nishida contributes character design and Miyajima takes responsibility for the scenario. Their first announced project at KADATH now needs to take shape around the inn, its visitors and the expeditions that supply it. [1]

KADATH is seeking development partners. The studio is also preparing a vertical slice. [1]

A 2028 Target for Switch and PC

Under Mythos targets Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam in 2028, according to Noisy Pixel’s account of KADATH’s announcement; Nintendo Everything also reports the Switch release window. Neither supplied article provides a month, day or price. The platform named in those reports is Nintendo Switch, and the material does not announce a separate Switch 2 version. KADATH’s current production work includes a vertical slice (a representative portion of the game) covering its core mechanics and planned visual and audio direction. That development stage puts the teaser in context: the studio has shown its premise and an early view of play while work on the underlying experience continues. [1, 2]

KADATH’s teaser shows the hot spring inn, dungeon exploration and the move toward darker material, Noisy Pixel reports. The footage comes from the game in development. The next fuller showing has several systems left to explain: how combat works moment to moment, what happens when the cat fails to return, and how expanding the inn changes the guests and journeys available. KADATH’s announced extraction structure makes that return journey central, but the available reports leave its exact stakes open. [1, 2]
