Arkane Lyon Faces November 13 Deadline Under Widening Xbox Cuts

Arkane Lyon faces a November 13 deadline to find a buyer before Microsoft moves to close the studio, placing 217 jobs and Marvel’s Blade at risk.

Microsoft has set a November 13 deadline for Arkane Lyon to find an outside buyer or face closure under Xbox cuts [1]. The French team made Dishonored and Deathloop before being swept into a wider shakeup under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma [2]. Over 217 jobs are at risk [3]. If talks fail, Marvel’s Blade could be cancelled before its planned 2027 launch [1].

Why French Rules Shield Arkane Lyon

Xbox management told the Lyon developers on July 16 that Microsoft planned to shut them down [1]. French labor rules applied. Under France’s Florange Law, any commercial enterprise with more than 1,000 employees must spend at least three months actively seeking an outside buyer before moving to shut down an active workplace or lay off staff [2]. That mandatory grace period began during the summer and ends on November 13, leaving Arkane Lyon with only weeks to find a new owner [1].

Leaked papers seen by Le Monde show that if no outside buyer appears, Microsoft plans to wind down operations starting in late 2026 and running through the first quarter of 2027 [1]. The two sides are holding talks over an employment protection plan, known in France as a PSE, to set redundancy terms and explore staff transfers to other Microsoft groups. Simon, a union delegate using a pseudonym, said talks are going badly because Microsoft gives staff little choice [4]. In a statement, Microsoft said it is still exploring options for Arkane Lyon while talking with workers and the Social and Economic Committee [1]. It added that it wants a partner to help fund and sell Marvel’s Blade [4].

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier said multiple paths are open that could still save Arkane Lyon. Schreier said he would be surprised if Microsoft actually closes it. Arkane Austin closed in 2024. Microsoft shut that sister group in Texas after what it called a reprioritization of titles and resources [2]. Microsoft originally bought Arkane Lyon in 2021 when it acquired parent publisher ZeniMax [1].

Xbox Studio Spin-Offs

The crisis at Arkane Lyon follows deep cuts ordered by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma [3]. In July, Sharma announced 1,600 job cuts as the initial step of a plan to eliminate 3,200 Xbox employees before the close of the current fiscal year. Microsoft let three first-party teams spin off: Double Fine Productions, Compulsion Games, and Undead Labs [1]. Ninja Theory was also slated for a buyout, but Xbox leader Matt Booty said two separate purchase deals fell through, leaving that developer facing closure as well [4].

Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio posted on social media to Sharma, asking, “Regarding Arkane… how much? I’m asking for a friend,”. Fans quickly offered to send Colantonio money to buy back Arkane Lyon [3]. Microsoft also backed third-party deals, including an agreement where Physint secured Xbox as a publisher.

Microsoft later cut 268 more workers. That wave brought big reorganizations among first-party teams. Microsoft shifted the Halo franchise under Activision and merged Turn 10 Studios with Playground Games, putting Forza Motorsport side by side with Forza Horizon and Fable [3].

Union Objections in France

French labor unions reacted with fury to the closure threat. Printemps Écologique and the Video Game Workers’ Union, known as the STJV, said initial shock turned into great anger over decisions they called incoherent. If Microsoft finds no buyer by mid-November, 217 workers will lose their jobs in Lyon [3].

Printemps Écologique said redundancy talks are going badly. The union asked Microsoft to push back the deadline to give bidders time to finish purchase talks. It may also sue Microsoft in French courts. Union leaders argued that closing Arkane Lyon contradicts years of positive financial reviews shared with the Works Council. Representatives stated that the Lyon group remains in good financial health, claiming Microsoft wants to shut it down simply to “improve the profitability of its short-term investments”. STJV added that worker strikes stay on the table if Microsoft refuses to protect staff livelihoods [2].

Unions said finding new game jobs in Europe will be difficult due to heavy industry layoffs. Severance terms must reflect that harsh reality [2]. Several takeover offers are being weighed. Staff hope Microsoft accepts an outside offer before the November 13 cutoff [1].

Status of Marvel’s Blade

The closure threat puts Marvel’s Blade in danger. Arkane Lyon unveiled the licensed vampire game at The Game Awards in 2023 [1]. Back in June, developers assured fans that work on the game was still moving ahead despite rumors of cancellation [4]. Union delegates said Marvel’s Blade is now near the end of production, expressing strong faith that the game will succeed if Microsoft allows it to ship [2].

Xbox insisted in July that no announced first-party games would be cancelled during staff cuts. But reporting from The Verge revealed that Marvel’s Blade ran over budget and was delayed internally to 2027 [1]. If Microsoft shutters Arkane Lyon between late 2026 and early 2027, the game could be cancelled entirely. Union leaders warned that killing the game would be “a monumental, human, and commercial waste” [2].

Cancelling Marvel’s Blade would end a celebrated legacy [1]. Arkane Studios built its fame on immersive sims, starting with Dishonored on October 9, 2012. That hit used Unreal Engine 3 under publisher Bethesda [2]. The team followed it with Dishonored 2 and Deathloop [1]. Unions hope fan backing will push Microsoft to accept a buyer [2].

Arkane Lyon Facing More Xbox Cuts

The trouble at Arkane Lyon comes as Xbox leaders claim the business is recovering. CEO Asha Sharma told staff this month that Xbox returned to growth after a sharp freefall caused by Game Pass price increases. Sharma praised early momentum for Minecraft Dungeons 2, player hype for Gears of War: E-Day, and testing numbers for World of Warcraft: Forever [3].

Yet staff face more job losses within Xbox. Industry reports say Microsoft plans three more rounds of layoffs before the fiscal year ends. The next cut is set for late October, with more reductions following in November and January 2027 to finish eliminating 1,600 more jobs [3]. That will bring the total cuts under Sharma to 3,200 workers. These rolling cuts prove that Microsoft’s cost reductions are far from over, leaving workers at at-risk teams with very little job security. Arkane Lyon sits directly in the crosshairs of that wider retreat [1].

With the November 13 cutoff coming fast, the next few weeks will decide if Arkane Lyon survives as an independent creator or joins the list of closed teams. Representatives continue to review takeover bids to keep the Lyon office alive [1]. For the 217 workers in Lyon, securing a new buyer is the only way to avoid a shutdown [2].
