Toei Animation began streaming a promotional story preview for the visual novel The Stellar Angel on Thursday, revealing its original plot, choice systems, and new cast members [1]. Studio51 is developing the game for global audiences, releasing it on PC through Steam and on Nintendo Switch in Japan under the title Rakuen Tsuihō -The Stellar Angel-. The release gives international players access to the sci-fi universe twelve years after the first movie debuted in theaters [2].

The Stellar Angel Trailer and Release Details

Writer Shotaro Teshirogi, who wrote the Expelled from Paradise: mission.0 prequel novel for the original film, created the script for the new visual novel. Major scenes feature full voice acting. The release calendar also pairs the game with an anime feature film titled Rakuen Tsuihō -Expelled from Paradise- Kokoro no Resonance, which opens in Japanese theaters on November 13 [2].

Both the visual novel and the feature film serve as sequels to the 2014 movie, but they follow different paths [1]. The game arrives on November 26 on Steam with full English and Japanese text support [2]. Japanese players can also buy the game on Nintendo Switch on the exact same date [1].

Toei Animation first announced the visual novel project on May 14, 2026, creating an official interactive continuation of the story [3]. Story paths shift with each player choice [1].

Story Setting and New Cast

The story takes place in A.D. 2400 on an Earth devastated by a catastrophic event called the Nano Hazard. Facing ruin, 98% of humanity abandoned both the surface and their own flesh and blood to migrate into the virtual world of DEVA [1]. Fewer than 2% of human beings remain on the barren surface below [3].

Trouble begins on Earth when a strange lifeform called the Paraflora sprouts on the surface and spreads over the ground at high speed, drawing colossal worms that attack people one after another in the wasteland. The epicenter of this outbreak lies in Svarga, a desert ghost town abandoned long ago because of a plague. At the same time, an agent from DEVA’s Security Bureau steals a top-secret data file known as Grey Goo, which holds sensitive information about the Nano Hazard, and flees to Earth [1]. The fugitive’s trail leads straight to Svarga, turning the forgotten settlement into a gathering point where rival agendas collide [2].

The trailer introduces two new characters who travel to Svarga during the crisis. Naama (Yui Sakagihara) is a rookie DEVA security agent sent to investigate the strange events. She meets Aradea (Harumi Sakurai), a former security agent who now lives on the surface [1]. Rie Kugimiya reprises her role as protagonist Angela Balzac, who heads down to Earth to uncover the conspiracy [2].

K2-System Choice Mechanics

Studio51 built the game around an interactive branching setup called the K2-System [2]. This setup divides choices into two clear categories: Kizuna, which means bonds, and Kakugo, which stands for resolve [1].

Kizuna choices highlight the emotional bonds that Angela forms with people she meets on the surface world [2]. These options let her show empathy and lean into human feelings instead of following rigid protocol [1]. In contrast, Kakugo choices push Angela to focus on her resolve as a DEVA agent, prioritizing her mission above personal attachments. The choices players make determine how the plot branches into different routes, which can lead to multiple outcomes, including bad ends [2].

These branching paths give players control over Angela’s loyalties throughout the mystery [1]. If she prioritizes personal ties, she risks defying DEVA, but if she chooses blind duty, she might abandon people who help her survive [2]. Every choice matters in Svarga [1].

Origins of the Original Film

The series began in November 2014 when the anime film Expelled from Paradise debuted in 13 theaters in Japan and sold 110,000 tickets. Its home video release on Blu-ray Disc and DVD later sold more than 70,000 copies in Japan. The film won the Best Animation of the Year Award at the 24th Japan Movie Critics Awards in May 2015. In November 2024, Toei Animation brought the movie back to Japanese theaters in 4K resolution to celebrate its ten-year anniversary [2].

Director Seiji Mizushima directed the original film following his work on anime series like Fullmetal Alchemist and Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Writer Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus penned the screenplay, having previously written Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the light novel Fate/Zero. Graphinica handled the animation, while T-Joy distributed the film. The film had its European debut at the Swedish anime convention ConFusion on December 11, 2014, with director Seiji Mizushima attending in person, before Aniplex of America screened it in 15 theaters in the United States on December 13, 2014 [3].

In the original movie, Angela travels to Earth in a cloned body to catch Frontier Setter, an artificial intelligence that infiltrated DEVA’s digital network. She teams up with surface scout Dingo and learns to appreciate organic life, including food and music. When Angela learns that Frontier Setter is only trying to launch the Genesis Ark into deep space, she disobeys orders to destroy it. She chooses to stay with Dingo [3].

Visual Novel Lineage in The Stellar Angel

In adopting a visual novel format for The Stellar Angel, Studio51 draws on a storytelling medium that began in Japan during the late 1980s. Often called noberugēmu in Japan, these story-driven games focus on text, character portraits, and branching choices. Developer System Sacom launched DOME in 1988, promoting it as “Novelware”. Chunsoft popularized the concept during the 1990s with sound novels like Otogirisō in 1992 and Banshee’s Last Cry in 1994, which paired text boxes with atmospheric music [4].

During the late 1990s, influential Japanese releases like Yu-no in 1996 and Kanon in 1999 set the gameplay patterns and multiple endings that define visual novels today. Lower production budgets and shorter creation times allowed visual novels to become the most common type of PC game made and sold in Japan. The genre gained broader attention in the West in 2005 with the release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which originally launched in Japan in 2001 [4]. PerEXP Teamworks previously reported on classic anime distribution when Darkroom added the Angel Densetsu OVA to its streaming catalog.

The debut of The Stellar Angel on November 26 forms part of a wider revival for the franchise. Two weeks earlier, the sequel movie Rakuen Tsuihō -Expelled from Paradise- Kokoro no Resonance opens in Japanese theaters on November 13. The feature film reunites Mizushima, Urobuchi, character designer Masatsugu Saitō, and composer NARASAKI, while introducing new agents played by Ayane Sakura, Saori Hayami, and Yoshino Aoyama [2]. Together, the visual novel and the film expand Angela’s world on both PC screens and in movie theaters [1].
