GKIDS Sets 100 Meters Blu-Ray Release for December

On Wednesday, GKIDS revealed plans to ship the collector’s edition 100 Meters Blu-ray on December 1, 2026. The set brings director Kenji Iwaisawa’s animated sports drama to home video shelves across North America. Exclusive art cards, a mini-poster, and behind-the-scenes video features accompany the release to document the movie’s production. Pre-orders are currently open on the distributor’s online store ahead of the winter street date [2].

100 Meters Blu-ray Set and Physical Bonus Materials

The disc release arrives as a Collector’s Edition package with new cover artwork on a collectible slipcase. GKIDS bundled five exclusive art cards and a mini-poster inside the case to give fans printed illustrations from the production. It’s a package built for viewers who want printed keepsakes rather than relying only on digital streaming libraries [1].

Special features on the disc package highlight a rotoscoping workshop, an interview conducted with director Kenji Iwaisawa, and breakdowns of key sprinting scenes. Buyers will also find promotional trailers and teasers stored on the disc [1]. The rotoscoping workshop gives viewers a clear look at how the production team filmed real runners to draw frame-by-frame movement for each race. Fans who want to see how animators turned reference footage into finished line art get plenty of detail through these supplemental video features [2].

Pre-orders are live on GKIDS’ web store. Unlike the broad retail distribution seen in Crunchyroll’s late September anime and manga releases, pre-orders for the 100 Meters Blu-ray remain exclusive to the official GKIDS online shop. The company hasn’t listed the Collector’s Edition with third-party retailers yet, keeping early orders tied to its direct storefront [1]. Anime News Network reporter Alex Mateo and Anime Trending writer William Moo both noted that buyers must order through the GKIDS shop to secure the bundled art cards and mini-poster before packages ship in December. Customers who order through the storefront will receive their boxed sets right around the December street date [2].

Production Team Behind the 100 Meters Anime Film

Kenji Iwaisawa directed the film following his earlier feature On–Gaku: Our Sound and ahead of his upcoming project Hina is Beautiful. Studio ROCK’N ROLL MOUNTAIN handled the animation production [1]. Iwaisawa relied on real human movement to make track events look convincing on screen. The animators drew heavy, fast footraces that avoid cartoon exaggeration [2].

Screenwriter Yasuyuki Muto, known for writing Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, adapted the sports manga into a feature-length script charting the rivalry between two runners from sixth grade through high school. Keisuke Kojima handled character design duties and served as animation director. Kojima previously worked on My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World!. Keikankun Yamaguchi served as background art director, painting the school yards and running tracks that frame the story [1].

Music composer Hiroaki Tsutsumi wrote the soundtrack, having also composed the music for Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian. On the acting side, Tori Matsuzaka voices the gifted sprinter Togashi. Shota Sometani plays Komiya, the transfer student who becomes obsessed with the 100-meter dash [1]. Supporting cast members include Jun Kasama as Nigami, Koki Uchiyama as Zaitsu, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Kaido. All three voice actors bring notable anime experience to the athletic lineup [2].

Hyakuemu Manga Origins and Track Storyline

The anime film adapts the sports manga by author Uoto, who also created Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. Kodansha originally published the chapters through its Magazine Pocket digital service, running the story between November 6, 2018 and August 6, 2019, before gathering the sprint saga into five tankobon volumes. Japanese readers know the story under the title Hyakuemu, or shortened as 100M [1].

The print volumes completed the story before Uoto started later manga series. The plot follows two boys whose relationship changes over years of sprint training [1].

GKIDS described the premise in its official synopsis: “Togashi is a track star who was born to run. As a kid, he is naturally gifted and wins every 100-meter race without effort. But in the sixth grade, he meets Komiya, a transfer student who is full of determination but lacks technique. In teaching him, Togashi gives Komiya a new purpose: to win no matter what. Years pass by, and Togashi and Komiya meet again on the track as rivals—and reveal their true selves.” [1]

That rivalry pushes both boys to confront their limits as they grow up on the track. Togashi’s natural talent clashes with Komiya’s sheer drive. The plot pits easy victory against painful effort. When the two runners face each other again as high school sprinters, running isn’t just a simple game anymore. It’s a test of who they really are when the race clock starts ticking. Uoto used the short length of a ten-second sprint to show how small choices make a lasting difference in young lives [2].

International Festival Run and Theatrical Screenings

The movie opened in Japanese theaters on September 19, 2025. It took eighth place at the box office during its opening weekend [1]. During its first three days in Japanese cinemas, the film earned 102,666,040 yen, which equaled about US$694,700 as local moviegoers in Japan turned out for the track drama [2].

That box office run showed healthy interest from theater audiences, helping the title gain attention before traveling abroad to international theaters [1]. Prior to its cinema debut, festival attendees watched a preliminary preview at the Annecy International Film Festival in June 2024 during its Work in Progress showcase [2]. One year later, the finished film held its world premiere at Annecy in June 2025 within the Official Selection category [1]. The movie later won the runner-up award for Best Animated Film at the Florida Film Critics Circle Awards in 2025 [2].

The anime also reached theaters in Canada, the U.K., Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore [1]. During October 2025, GKIDS brought the sports anime to American theaters, presenting the movie in both English-dubbed and English-subtitled formats with showings in Los Angeles and an East Coast premiere at the Japan Society in New York with director Kenji Iwaisawa in attendance. Following those theatrical dates, Netflix began streaming the movie in December 2025 with Japanese audio and English subtitles [2].

Where to Pre-Order the 100 Meters Blu-ray Disc

Home video collectors who want an uncompressed copy can now pre-order the 100 Meters Blu-ray ahead of its winter launch. While Netflix offers quick streaming access, a boxed disc ensures that fans retain permanent access to the movie even if digital catalogs change in the future [2]. The high bitrate on a Blu-ray disc helps Iwaisawa’s hand-drawn animation look crisp on home television screens, preserving fine line details from the pencil drawings [1].

Fans can place pre-orders now through the official GKIDS online store before the set ships out on December 1, 2026. GKIDS hasn’t announced a basic disc release without the art cards and poster, so this Collector’s Edition box stands as the main way to own the movie on physical media [1]. Ordering from the distributor guarantees buyers get the bundled paper goods before the print run runs out [2].

The release of the 100 Meters Blu-ray caps a two-year journey that started with festival previews and led to awards recognition. For anime fans who track Kenji Iwaisawa’s directing career, having the sprint movie on a shelf is a welcome addition ahead of his next animated project [1]. It won’t be long before copies start arriving on fans’ doorsteps this December [2].
