Bandai Namco released Once Upon a Katamari for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. The launch brings the ball-rolling series to the new console alongside the paid Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC pack [4]. This edition delivers updated visuals, smoother frame rates, and exclusive mouse controls designed for the newer hardware [2]. Players who already own the game on the original Nintendo Switch can jump into the updated edition right away through a free patch or move their previous save data across hardware [3].

New Controls and Features on Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 version introduces exclusive mouse controls that offer players a fresh way to steer their growing Katamari through crowded rooms [4]. While earlier console releases relied purely on dual analog sticks, this new hardware option lets players push and pivot the ball with direct mouse inputs for sharper turns, changing how players steer around tight corners and navigate clustered household clutter [2]. It’s a noticeable shift in physical handling [3].

Performance gains also set this edition apart from the earlier Switch release [2]. When dozens of wandering animals, street signs, and vehicles crowd the screen at once, the system maintains steady action so the ball doesn’t hitch or drop frames during busy stages with hundreds of loose pieces rolling across the floor [4]. Nintendo’s newer hardware continues to expand its catalog with ports and upgrades, as seen with Stellar Blade on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside major third-party releases.

Upgrading between Nintendo consoles doesn’t erase previous progress [3]. Bandai Namco confirmed that players can transfer their existing save data from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2, provided that no save file for the game already exists on the new system [4]. Existing owners who play on the newer system also receive a free update that unlocks the mouse control settings and performance improvements without an extra upgrade charge [3]. The patch costs players nothing.

Is Once Upon a Katamari a Remake or Sequel?

Players wondering about the project’s roots will find that Once Upon a Katamari is a new story entry rather than a graphical remake of earlier classics [2]. The adventure kicks off after a regular castle clean-up goes completely wrong in the heavens [3]. While fiddling with a strange scroll, the King of All Cosmos accidentally crushes the Earth, the Moon, and countless stars. This left the night sky completely dark and barren [5].

To fix the damage and rebuild the lost planets, the Prince and his royal relatives must follow instructions from the mysterious scroll and journey across time [3]. Their mission carries them through several distinct historical periods, rolling up ancient plants and giant creatures in the Jurassic Period, dodging frozen obstacles during the Ice Age, and rolling through bustling villages in historic Japan as their sphere grows steadily larger [4]. Rolling mechanics stay true to the franchise, but the stages add helpful power-up tools such as a magnet that draws nearby loose objects directly onto the Katamari sphere so players don’t miss small items scattered along their path [5]. That magnet helps players grow their clumps much faster during timed challenges when every single stray pebble or toy counts toward reaching the target diameter [2].

As the ball expands from a few centimeters to gigantic dimensions, players scoop up increasingly absurd targets, moving from tiny thumbtacks to full buildings and prehistoric dinosaurs [2]. “Once upon a time a katamari rolled through both past and present,” the publisher explained when describing the game’s time-travel premise [5]. The story preserves the cheerful humor that defines the series, pairing odd royal dialogue with catchy background music as the Prince works to satisfy his demanding father. The King demands bigger stars [4].

Rolling LIVE Highlights Brings Streaming Quests

Launching alongside the new console edition is the paid Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC, which brings extra challenges to Once Upon a Katamari [4]. The expansion draws its inspiration from Katamari Damacy Rolling LIVE, the mobile title originally released in 2025 [6]. Players enter a special hub plaza called Super Stream, where ten brand-new quests task the Prince with rolling alongside modern internet personalities and streamers to keep the King relevant across digital channels and social networks. Streamers cheer as the sphere grows [7].

The King of All Cosmos is eager to protect his celebrity status across the universe, so each streaming mission challenges players to boost viewer numbers and catch online trends. Bandai Namco said that players must roll up themed objects to help the monarch “stay ahead of the trends, impress his fans, and become even more popular” [4]. It’s a playful spin on creator culture that fits the absurd personality of the franchise without altering its core ball-rolling loop [2].

Beyond the ten streaming missions, the DLC package adds a wealth of collectible goodies for players who enjoy cosmetics and audio tracks [3]. The add-on supplies 12 Katamari series BGM tracks that can be selected during stage gameplay, so players hear upbeat franchise melodies as they roll through crowded rooms and outdoor streets packed with curious objects [7]. Players also gain access to six new Cousins and 18 costume accessories to dress up their rolling characters before jumping into stages. Players can equip 18 outfits [5].

Multiplayer Modes and Cousin Customization

The Prince doesn’t have to tackle the cosmos by himself in Once Upon a Katamari [4]. Players can choose to play as the Prince or pick from 74 cousins and kin who appear throughout the game’s expansive family roster. A detailed customization menu lets players adjust the colors and facial expressions of these characters, giving everyone room to build original Cousin styles for their runs. The family roster includes 74 relatives [5].

Competitive rolling takes center stage through KatamariBall, a galactic sport designed for up to four participants [5]. Players compete in fast-paced matches to see who can gather the most objects, steal leads, and roll up the largest sphere before the round clock expires [4]. The mode supports online play against opponents worldwide, though jumping into online lobbies on Switch 2 requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Switch Online is required for lobbies [5].

Solo players who prefer offline competition can sharpen their skills in KatamariBall by taking on computer-controlled rivals across multiple arenas. The official store page notes “scintillating offline play against CPU opponents” for anyone who wants quick matches without an internet connection [5]. Because each cousin handles smoothly, local sessions offer plenty of replay value whether players test new strategies or practice fast cornering with their favorite characters [2]. Offline matches run without network connections [5].

Once Upon a Katamari Editions and Save Transfers

Bandai Namco structured the rollout of Once Upon a Katamari across several digital editions to suit different player preferences. Buyers can pick the Standard Edition containing just the base game, or step up to the Rolling LIVE Highlights Edition, which bundles the base adventure with the new streaming DLC [6]. Both packages are available now on the Nintendo eShop alongside matching digital releases across other major storefronts. Launch discounts vary across digital storefronts [2].

Music fans have access to the comprehensive Royal Sound Edition, which packs the base game, the DLC, and multiple soundtrack collections. This top-tier bundle includes Series songs: Side A, Series songs: Side B, Dance Dance Remixes, and Neo Remixes for extensive audio options. It permanently replaced the older King of Sound Edition, which Bandai Namco officially discontinued on October 7, 2026, just one day ahead of the wider platform rollout. Bandai Namco retired the earlier soundtrack package [6].

While the Switch 2 release brings exclusive mouse controls, Once Upon a Katamari isn’t locked to Nintendo hardware. The base game and the Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC are also available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and the original Nintendo Switch [4]. That multiplatform availability means players on every supported system can pick up the DLC separately or jump into the complete package right now. Every platform receives the extra stages [3].
