Arc System Works Adds Phoenix Cyclops to Marvel Tokon

Arc System Works revealed gameplay for Phoenix Cyclops, the first Year 1 DLC fighter for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, arriving on November 2 with a Dark Phoenix form and classic costumes.

Arc System Works revealed gameplay for Phoenix Cyclops on October 7, 2026, confirming that the mutant combatant joins MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2, 2026 [1, 2]. The four-versus-four tag fighting game brings Scott Summers to PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam with classic beam attacks, ground bounces, and sweeping cosmic fire [2, 5]. Scott Summers leads the Year 1 DLC pass as the first of four planned combatants [4].

Arc System Works Unveils Phoenix Cyclops Gameplay

Ray Chase voices Scott Summers. Producer Takeshi Yamanaka explained that Cyclops functions as an all-rounder who can strike up close with heavy blows or control space from long range using an arsenal of energy projectiles, command throws, rushing strikes, and setup tools [1, 2]. He doesn’t rely solely on keep-away tactics, because his close-range tools allow him to punish opponents who jump carelessly into his space. Close-range brawling complements his beam game [1, 2].

In his base form, Cyclops fires optic blasts that can ricochet off the floor to catch dodging foes off guard during high-speed exchanges. That bouncing beam gives teammates room to reset their positions during chaotic four-versus-four tag bouts, while wide-area fire attacks powered by the Phoenix Force allow Scott to blanket large portions of the screen and trap retreating rivals [1, 3, 5]. It’s a versatile fighting style that allows him to switch between zoning and rushdown pressure whenever the flow of battle shifts [1, 3].

Phoenix Cyclops enters the game on November 2 as part of the Year 1 Pass on PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam [1, 2]. Nearly two months have passed since the launch of the game, and developers are also working on upcoming balance adjustments for Assists to keep matches stable as new fighters join [1, 3]. Player counts on Steam remain modest. The studio hopes a flagship comic hero will bring fresh energy to online lobbies [2, 3].

Solar Shards and the Dark Phoenix Transformation

The central mechanic of the character revolves around gathering cosmic energy during combat. As players fire off Optic Blast techniques in a match, they build up Phoenix Force energy known as Solar Shards [1, 2]. Collecting four Solar Shards unlocks a powerful Super move that shifts Scott into his Dark Phoenix form. Four Solar Shards trigger the transformation [1, 3].

Entering Dark Phoenix form grants a temporary power boost that turns Scott Summers into a ferocious offensive threat on the battlefield, enhancing his standard strikes with Phoenix fire while his Optic Blasts deal increased damage to anyone caught in their path [1, 2, 3]. His health drains during the transformation [1, 2]. Players must carefully weigh the risk of losing life against the offensive boost, because misjudging the timing can leave Scott with very little health if an opponent blocks his attacks and waits out the timer. Careless players will lose the round [1].

After the dark surge runs its course, Scott powers down for a brief spell before restoring his protective gear and restarting the shard hunt. That meter management system turns Scott Summers into a high-risk fighter whose rounds hinge on smart energy collection [1, 3]. Triggering the power-up too early risks draining his own life bar before securing a knockout. When managed well, it’s one of the most punishing mechanics on the roster [1, 3].

Why Developers Chose Phoenix Cyclops for the Roster?

Early in development, Cyclops stood as a top candidate for the base roster under the Unbreakable X-Men banner. Because Scott Summers fought in many Marvel fighting titles through the years, his visual identity and optic blasts feel familiar to longtime fans who already know his standard style. The team wanted something fresh. Narrative designers proposed the Phoenix interpretation to give the fighter fresher visuals and an unexpected fighting style, adding something new to his long fighting game legacy [1].

The concept draws on Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men comic crossover arc, a story in which Scott Summers joined the Phoenix Five group and gained cosmic power after taking energy from his mutant allies [1, 2]. That comic run stands as a memorable chapter in Marvel lore, where Avengers ensemble storylines continue to expand in comic arcs and media adaptations. By drawing on that arc, Arc System Works created a version of Cyclops that feels different from earlier fighting game entries [1].

Producer Takeshi Yamanaka said the team wanted to portray Scott Summers as a leader who tries to tame a destructive cosmic power to save mutantkind from extinction. In this narrative framing, Summers commits himself to absolute justice, accepting grim choices and tough moves whenever mutant survival hangs in the balance. The studio gave him a slightly younger appearance to contrast with the blazing aura of the Phoenix Force, while illustrating his shift from an idealistic squad leader into fiery corruption. Above all, Yamanaka said their goal was simple: “to make him look as cool as possible” [1].

Classic Costumes in the Phoenix Cyclops DLC

Arc System Works recognized that many comic fans still love Scott’s vintage look. Because of that, the studio will release two additional DLC costumes called “Classic” and “Legacy” on November 2 with the character. Both suits arrive on November 2. Both outfits provide appearances closer to Cyclops’ beloved comic and animated designs [1, 2].

Yamanaka explained that whenever the team reinterprets a classic hero, they understand that players who grew up reading comics or watching animated shows have their own image of what the character should look like. The studio adopted a philosophy that whenever they choose an uncommon version of a fighter, classic-inspired costumes should also be available for fans. That choice ensures players aren’t forced to stick with the Phoenix look if they prefer his retro uniforms [1].

The “Classic” and “Legacy” suits let players swap out the cosmic uniform without losing any of his base Optic Blast moves or Solar Shard abilities. Both skins will be available as downloadable content on November 2 for PlayStation 5 and PC players alike [1, 2]. Longtime X-Men fans get their favorite retro suits. It’s a welcome gesture toward players who want to field the team leader in his vintage suits [1, 4].

The trial allows console owners to test the full fighting game on PlayStation 5 before buying. The title also received its first PlayStation Store sale today, offering a discount on the Ultimate Edition for players who want to jump in before the DLC fighter arrives [1, 2].

Scott Summers leads the Year 1 roster expansion. With Phoenix Cyclops leading the Year 1 DLC lineup, Arc System Works aims to build lasting interest in its tag fighter through post-launch support and tournament presence [1, 3, 4]. Tournament players will get their first hands-on impressions at EVO France this weekend, while the rest of the fighting game community can pick up Scott Summers on November 2 [1, 2].
